Track your calories for 2 weeks and see how much you’re consuming. I use my fitness pal.

Also weigh yourself every two days to set a baseline over the two weeks of calorie tracking. If you maintain the same weight that is your BMR (base metabolic rate) from there consume around 500 calories less than this.

If you’re 60lbs overweight it will begin to shift.

With regards to a gym go into a proper old school gym. Not sure where in Brooklyn but google will help. Speak with the owner and say you’re going to school in September and want to loose some weight. If you’re honest with them about your situation. I would almost guarantee that they will let you go for a 3 month contract and help you with a basic plan. Money is money after all.

The first two weeks will be the hardest and you’ll most likely need to sleep more.

I went from 250lbs to around 190lbs over 2 years. So it is doable but it will take time. My biggest loss was 22lb in 10 weeks tracking everything & training 10-15 hours as an endurance athlete. (I did play high level university sport prior, so had a large training base)

I lift at home. Craigslist will probably get you a bench and all the plates and bars you need to lift for 100 bucks. You will need to buy larger plates within 3 months if you are serious but they should be .50 a pound [half price]

If you really must go to a gym, pick the closest one and run there, don't drive.

I’ll help you out.

1) it doesn’t matter where you go. If they have a rack, dumbbells, and cardio (preferably a stair stepper, but a treadmill or rowing machine will do) you will be fine. A fit person will be fit no matter what’s available.

2) the contract period doesn’t matter. Working out is a rest of your life thing. Anything short of this is failure.

3) start off doing max strength training. You need a base level of strength before you can do other forms of strength training.

4) your commitment is to GO to the gym. That’s it. You can leave before doing your workout, but going is non-negotiable. Write down the commitment in the positive. (“I will go to the gym on my gym days.”)

5) Diet diet diet. Do NOT attempt “incremental change.” Your current eating habits made you into a fat loser. Don’t just be a little better, be what you want to be. That means picking a strict calorie restriction plan. Keto, IF, or IIFYM. This is critical. Do not fuck this one up. No half measures. Don’t be half of a fat loser, be your best self. Expect the first week to be hard, but mentally settle into eating rarely until it doesn’t feel like a sacrifice.

6) I will preempt any claim that you aren’t mentally ready for this. You wrote this post and additionally got my attention. That is enough.

7) Discipline is different than motivation. Motivation is a short term desire. Discipline is going when you promised yourself. It’s keeping your own promise. Use both to stay engaged. Visualize what you want to be to trigger motivation. Reflect on when you go when you don’t to trigger discipline. Discipline develops slower. Use short term motivation to get you there. So you tell me fatty, do you like your shirt hugging your tits? You might not know what it feels like to have low body fat but as an example, it feels good when your seatbelt settles against your flat stomach.
