How can I tell if I'm being "aloof" or "aloof" enough? I'm beginning to understand that being aloof is a key staple in being cool/attractive, but what exactly does it mean?

I have a friend who would describe himself as aloof and happens to constantly be getting lucky. However, he's very awkward, shy, and negative at times. He happens to be able to defeat that by being quiet, anti-verbose, witty and sarcastic. However, I'm not like that. I'm more talkative, more immature, more goofy, more outgoing, more adventurous and more of a risk-taker. That is not to say that I'm socially inept or excessively needy; I'm not. I know many people and am able to handle a social interaction proficiently. I've also been described as laid back. My problem is: what is being aloof and how do I merge it with my personality so I'm not obviously (or at all) trying to go against my strengths?
