I normally hate canned dialogue but this is a great low-risk way to keep a conversation going. I could talk about movies or music all day, and that's because people like to talk about their interests.

"I'm sure you get this all the time, but what's your favorite Stanley Kubrick film?"

I asked this 30 seconds into a conversation with a girl the other day and she responded surprisingly well to it. She didn't even know who he was, which of course makes it all the more humorous. Before I knew it, me and her were talking about what made The Shinning so creepy. I maintained that it was the Overlook's carpeting-- she insisted it was the ghosts. Ended with a #-close and, more importantly, a lovely conversation.
