I dont mind going out alone but when I tell people that I dont mind doing so they are always, without exception, surprised

I always take that as a bad thing, but is it? Or are they just surprised because they would find it hard to do?

When approaching a girl I almost never use a wingman. I do however like to have a "home-base" to go back to if I get rejected. Friends are best for that. If I go out alone it's hard to create that place. I usually end up using the smokers area for that.
