Went from a complete ditz to getting a girls number by cold approaching.

For me it was just walk up to a girl, act confident of course, say she looks nice and ask if anyone is In her life. If not ask if she can get her number, if yes wish her well and try again.

Bro forget about flirting, escalating and all these stuff. Start with learning how to say hi to a girl without shitting your pants then having longer boring convos...etc and build gradually....
