I sometimes have the exact same problem with the exact same thoughts (looking for rational explanations for WHY things happened), so please don't take this as throwaway advice.
First thing to do it is to catch yourself when you are doing it. Whenever I find myself doing this, I just clear my head. I look around at what is REALLY happening around me and not what I perceive to be happening. Then I try to think about absolutely nothing and just react to stimuli in my environment.
A big part of what I would do when I was overthinking things is I would think about what I was about to say or do and try to figure out exactly how people would react to my words or actions. I would then try to think of a contingency plan for every possible reaction of which I thought. Obviously, you can't realistically do this.
After I cleared my head, I just acted i.e. said or did whatever I wanted to do initially. Then I actually RESPONDED to people's reactions rather than planning for them. Whenever I do this, I always seem to get more positive reactions from people than I would from my "planned" conversation. This doesn't mean to not think at all about what you are going to say or do. You don't want to be an asshole. Just be yourself and live "in the moment" rather than in the (possible) future that exists only in your mind.
Hope this helps.
