Sounds like you don't even know the girl yet and you wanna ask if she's single or not. Truthfully if she is single or not is irrelevant- get to know her.

When you put it like that it makes sense to have small chat instead of just diving right in. There is an event I know for a fact next Saturday that Im going to with friends. Its just a MLB baseball game. I can do the small chat and talk about sports and see if she even like any sports and/or baseball. (I hate baseball but its my friends birthday and Im gonna go) so maybe by next week I have an understanding and see if she wants to go.

Bingo. Just dont make it obvious you're chatting to invite her. I'd just keep it in my back pocket as a "wild card" and casually slip in about wanting to go to xyz event, and then find a snazzy way to get her to wanna come with.
