Always comment on their story. Build rapport that way. You don't need to number close from the first DM. Don't worry about rejection as you'll be lucky to get 1 out of 10 to answer

Replying to Stories is the way to go.

From what I can tell, people on Instagram are moving away from actual posts towards Stories in order to share what's going on in their lives. So that's essentially where Instagram "happens" nowadays.

That being said, I think there's a fine line you have to walk in terms of escalation. I wouldn't instantly write something out as a reply to her story. Use those reaction emojis first, and try striking up a conversation when it fits.

Also, don't reply to every single one of her stories. That becomes predictable quick, and in my experience, getting to know girls via Instagram takes time (say a few weeks). You don't want to appear like you're on the app 24/7. Reply to a story that you genuinely find interesting/funny/etc., and then miss a few. And when you think you have the opportunity to strike up a conversation that leads to you asking for her number, go for it.

But as with texting (I think Instagram is essentially the same, honestly) don't respond instantly, let the convo die out if it's drying up, wait for her to hit you up again, etc.

Your opening message is good, same as mine actually. I find a mix of serious and joking messages are good. Takes way more messages than online dating to number close, but it's not impossible. It helps to have things in common
