Any ideas that work well?

Especially, any ideas how to stop them when they are coming from the opposite direction and you have a 2 second window to get her attention and make her stop, without seeming like you're on fire or there's an emergency?

I used to ride the bus and the subway. Let me tell you, it was waaaay easier talking to women on public transportation than on the bike.
