I feel you man, it's really hard to find people that aren't trying to use social media to fuel their ego or validate themselves now. I think it stems from jealousy, girls want to have more likes than other girls because to them it means they're prettier? Just a guess. Nonetheless, you're young (18) and I'm sure she's young too (or maybe you're really fucking slick and got with a girl that's 25), ya'll have a lot of growing up to do still and hopefully she'll realize that real life is not on a glass screen; thankfully you already have that down :)

I seriously wish I lived in a time before smartphones and social media existed. It’s really starting to frustrate me. I’m an 18 year old dude, and I’m seeing this stuff firsthand crush the lives and confidence of guys and girls alike.
Honestly, the smartphones and social media don't really change as much as you might think. People have always had these issues.

It all seems so fake and surreal to me. Girl’s Instagram accounts are purely highlighting how awesome their lives are, when in reality they are backfeeding their depression and anxiety disorders with an insignificant number of likes.
Right. And those IG accounts now perform the function that simple in-person gossip used to perform. There hasn't been a fundamental change here, really. The anxiety and depression, etc., they were there before smartphones and all that.

It IS sickening. But you're hung up on technology as if it's the cause, when this issue you're speaking of is well over one hundred years old.

Perhaps the real issue here is that you're choosing to be around people who can't keep their noses out of their phones. You're describing a specific kind of person. Some people are always in their phones, others won't have anything to do with so much technology, and a lot of people are somewhere in the middle.

Right, so this is where you screen people OUT of your life. This shit bothers you? That's valid and not everyone has the same value system where they live life as victims and spend so much time in their phones.
Stop ranting and cut people out. Stop investing in them. It's only hard to think there are different people out there, until you actually start exercising your own standards.

....sometimes I just want to slow down and have a heartfelt and deep conversation with other people. Unfortunately, I find it hard to believe that this shit exists in my age range.
Of course you're not the only one. You just need to get a little creative perhaps to find different people. Check different clubs or student groups at school. Sit in a different area around different people at lunch time, if you eat in a commons area. Some other things:
Social partner dancing. Salsa, Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango, etc. You really can't go wrong. Learn something fun and have an excuse to be close to a girl in a fun and non-threatening way. (Just respect it as an activity & means of self-improvement first, and place to meet women second.)
Do a Facebook search for your city/town/area. Look under the Groups and Events tabs. Or you might search your city + some activity you're specifically interested in.
