Wait for her to post an Instagram story and reply to it with something simple. It’s an ice breaking tactic for when you see her in person.
If she has a weird IG handle, when you see her just say something like “oh hey it’s @igusername” or “Are you the real @username”
Edit: reread your post, didn’t notice that you don’t already have her on IG. You can still add her and do the same. A lot of girls are shy

To be honest, yes, but I don’t think 16 year old girls care all that much. If they’re interested, they’re interested.

They would've rejected you if you had asked in person too. If they're gonna say yes, they'll say yes regardless of whether you asked in text or in person
