my dog doesn't have a vaginal slit anymore. She's only a little over 3 years old.
I don't see why it would be any different than with my cat. I actually had to get an emergency hysterectomy on my cat because I didn't get her fixed. The vet explained that when cats don't have sex to remove the outer layer of skin during heat then bacteria gets in and it gets infected, and that's what happened to my cat. Her uterus was swollen and pinching shut her large intestine and pressing against her bladder so she couldn't really pee either.
They might leave the uterus in there, I'm not contesting that, but the fact is there is no more vaginal opening.

Then how do they prevent infections in the animals? Removing the ovaries and/or the uterus would prevent periods from occuring. Dogs have periods like a person does. You can get them doggie diapers for those days to wear around.
So if they left it open but non-functional it would just get infected, right? I mean nothing is ever cleaning it out at that point. It works normally on a "disposable cells" policy.
