Indeed.

I am just so sick and tired of the whole "Gee if I could just [trick/manipulate/convince] a whole LARGE bunch of other people to help me FUND the thing I want to do/person I want to help {but am unwilling to actually SACRIFICE myself to do}... then just THINK of all the 'wunnerful things' that could happen!"

Not to mention feeding into the many/various SJW converged operations like "Patreon" -- as well as MasterCard/Visa, et al -- who then skim 5%, 10% or more straight off the top...

I mean FFS if you know someone "in need" them fucking help them yourself! And if you're not willing (or ABLE) to do so -- and instead you have to play the whole "stone soup" scam -- then you're rather obviously NOT the best person to trust with such things in the first place.

anything worthwhile will need much more than just the stuff that gets pitched, which (aside from money and piece of the pie) the VCs are supposed to be good at taking care of. No?

Yes... ostensibly.

In reality... other than the "financial shenanigans" -- the chief aspect of which is mainly making certain THEY themselves come out smelling like a rose (foisting off the crap onto others) -- most of them are complete idiots when it comes to ascertaining what is/is not a good product, or effective "industry knowledge" (who you know is different than what).

Of course these days even that doesn't matter, since the majority of the VC's have all been chasing things that are little more than "dupe the masses" pyramid /ponzi style scam-schemes -- the aforementioned "crowdfunding" and more recently the "crypto/blockchain" insanity (with relatively brief "3D printing" & "drone" interludes in the middle). Meanwhile "private equity" (with copious amounts of QE money that filtered through to them) continue to "strip-mine" & offshore the tech from various SME firms as the founders die off & the subsequent generation wants to cash in/cash out... basically selling off our proverbial (and their literal) "birthright" for a mess of fiat pottage & imputed-value stocks & options.

Plus get to prepare really well before going in to sweat in front of them and their personal and... knee bending question(ing)s. The "laxative" bonus. ]=)

Even that's a joke; most of them don't really have the depth of knowledge to comprehend anything beyond buzzwords, and the very LAST thing they want to do is actually be the base funding for something of substance that is going to have to be built-up/built-out over a decade or longer... they generally prefer "puffball" things (heavily trendy jargon-laden BS) that they can sell off -- because of fad/fashion shit -- to 2nd & 3rd round "investors" (especially "institutional" money via various back-channels & the idiot managers of same) so they can quickly leverage their cash back out of the whole thing (and ideally an order of magnitude MORE).

Or at least that's been my experience around it in the past handful of years.

(I mean seriously, when you get asked "Is there any way you can leverage 'blockchain' technology with this?" -- in a manner sort of like how Kevin Smith noted the one producer was perpetually trying to get some "giant mechanical spider" into various movie scripts -- well what can you really say to that kind if inanity?)

Hmmm, sounds like the times have certainly changed. Or I'm getting old. Probably both. Been out of the loop for a while now, although some of the crypto stories did get carried over in my general direction by the wind, didn't sound,... substantial, like you said lots of buzz words. Ah well.

In many ways it's become almost as "insane" -- as say the weirdest of the "transgender" stuff -- we're talking like some alternate universe "bizarro world" crap.

These guys really don't have the least clue what "blockchain" is... but they're CERTAIN that your product (machine tool for the hobbyist woodworking market*) will NOT be a success (and they're not interested in investing in it) if it doesn't somehow make use of "blockchain" technology (take your pick, bitcoin, ethereum, whatever)... regardless of how utterly & completely (idiotically useless) that would be.

Why? Well because that's the TRENDY thing in 2017 & 2018 doncha kno?

* We're talking an overall market of multiple BILLIONS of dollars per year in the US alone; and several major (multinational) players one would easily be able to sell out/off to (or license the innovation to) in exchange for cash and/or per unit royalties IF we could just gain a "foothold" in the market & demonstrate sales viability at the retail level (things that are already selling very nicely as niche machines, as well as kits/plans, and we'd be able to sell {profitable} a boxed/finished/pro-sumer quality product, a much more capable tool, for less than even the kits go for ... the multinationals probably able to produce volume at even 1/2 that price).

Level of VC interest? ZERO. (Unless... again "Is there some way it can use blockchain?" WTF?)

I think it's more that they themselves have become "addicted" to very EASY "windfall" money... and of course worse, they see other (much more successful) VC firms having made insanely higher amounts yet (or at least so they've heard claimed and it definitely appears to have an element of truth) off of those "trendy" things.

They really DON'T fully comprehend how they GOT the money that they got... I mean, as I said, they DO understand the "high finance shenanigans" but often how the underlying business they sold off, or bought into & turned/flipped every became profitable, built up REAL equity to begin with... they're either not sure, or else don't intend on spending the effort (and time) to try to do it again.
It's sort of like a Lottery Winner... who is certain that the path to future financial success is... buying even MORE lottery tickets.
I suppose the other parallels would be the original "dot com boom/bubble" and/or the "housing boom/bubble" -- especially the whole "get rich via buying up MORE homes and then either quick-flipping or else just borrowing against the imputed "appraisal" equity gains to buy up even MORE houses... rinse & repeat." etc etc etc. (I mean -- circa 2005, 2006 -- everyone KNEW that house values never "crash", right? Plus didn't Bernanke assure everyone that the "fundamentals" were sound?)

Well same with "crypto" -- they may not comprehend ANY of the math, or whatever -- but they don't HAVE to: see there's this formula that says the value is going to "go to the moon" thousand-fold and higher increases in value. Plus tons of REALLY SUPER SMART math "jeenyuses" have tried to explain it to them, and assured them it's all SOLID (unbreakable crypto, like totally anonymous, etc etc etc).

Bizarro World.
