When I was in college I remember watching a grad student snatch up the leftover bagels and some other food from a company-sponsored hackathon.

A few years later we ended up on the same team at a FAANG company. He told me before coming to this company, working outside of the US, he'd gotten divorced and lost $50,000 (would be a lot more if he'd divorced after joining FAANG).

With that money he could've eaten at one of the university's restaurants every single meal, instead of scrounging bagels like a beggar.
