She didn't stage an elaborate hoax, she simply disappeared for a time to avoid her parents, and only made up the kidnapping thing when she reappeared, and then quickly admitted it wasn't true. Not great behavior, but I don't know what you could charge her for for disappearing. She still could be charged with filing a false report for the kidnapping claim.

There was a young couple from Chicago that disappeared some years back; there was massive media coverage and a gigantic, expensive multi-state manhunt. When they popped up a week or so later they had also just been trying to avoid their parents. They were never charged with anything.

I really don't see a gender issue here.
