Some points:

I don't recommend being confrontational, like "Where's your boyfriend?", instead pretend like she never said "I have a boyfriend" and continue with another subject preferably qualifying her. I once closed an HB9 who right away said "I have a boyfriend", and I just responded "You're really gorgeous, do guys approach you a lot?" and after 5 minutes I got her number and facebook.
Never speak on behalf of your friend, it's a lose/lose scenario: 1) she'll think he's a loser because he doesn't have balls to approach, and 2) she'll think you're a loser because you hang out with someone who you've identified as a loser, or 3) she'll think you're a loser because you're not admitting that YOU think she's cute and instead making up an imaginary "friend".
Her friend walked away because you didn't give her any attention, you must give both girls equal attention, at least at first.
If you lose her friend, you lose her too.
You never really run out of things to say, you were just too much in your head, you lost your state because you were dependent on her, her response, and the outcome (which is a typical newbie issue).
Generally, the hotter the girl is, the less chance you have to screw up, with the hottest girls walking away at the first screw up. I say you screwed up 2-3 times, with being confrontational, identifying your friend as a loser, and not talking to her friend. Had you been more positive, and laid back, with good energy, she would probably engage more of the conversation.
You could have re-approached her later on with "Hows it going Manchester girl? I never got your name.."
Remember the goal to pick up is to get the girl and her friend comfortable as fast as possible, if you come in with an ego, confrontational, or "better" than her, she will feel uncomfortable and shut you out or run away. Once she's comfortable, you can start building a connection.
Work on not doing things wrong, instead of doing things right, once you get that ironed out, then work on the right things.

Happen to me same shit yesterday. Except, I was alone, and girls were a bit nicer. But yes I often have a problem about not having enough things to talk about in clubs.
