I had a short conversation a few days back that has stuck with me. I was asked point blank “who makes the decisions in your marriage?” by a fairly newly married woman I know vaguely, but who also knows Jennifer reasonably well. I’ve never been asked this question directly by a person in real life and I was struck by how very personal of a question it was. Answering it truthfully had a slight sense of “outing” us…
“…so who makes the decisions in your marriage?”
“I do”.
“Really!”
“Yes. We talk a lot about things but ultimately I make final decisions on things if we need one. It’s fairly mutual but there’s a 51/50 thing there too.”
Then she surprised me…
“I make the decisions. My husband is scared of me.”
Damn. That. Just. Happened.
Holy cow, I couldn’t imagine being in a relationship with a woman that scared me. I’m happy to frame myself as the leader in my marriage, but the idea that Jennifer was actually scared of me would concern me. I can’t imagine a man could announce publicly that his wife was scared of him without someone dialing 911 as soon as he left the room, but she did it so casually that he really must be scared of her. Wow, just wow.
There are of course dominant women and submissive men out there, so a marriage between them can be quite functional and happy. Plenty of men pay good money to lick mistress’s boots while she whips them, so clearly there’s a market out there for submissive men and a place for dominant women as well. As long as no one is hurt I don’t really care what people do behind closed doors. The life you lead is yours, I’m just offering advice here. I’ve never said that husband led monogamous marriage is the only way to live, it’s just a strategy of living and I expound on that strategy so it can be played to your best advantage.
Even so… I had a distinct feeling that if I had said “well if you ever want to be with a man that isn’t scared of you…” and given her a naughty boy smile, that she would have just laughed it off. But also that her Rationalization Hamster might have started up about me every so often. Maybe once a month or so…
I didn’t though. We weren’t in private so her anti-slut defense would have activated and it would have backfired. Plus to be quite honest, Jennifer is way hotter.
