What is ASMR?

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a relaxing, tingly sensation that starts on the scalp and moves down the neck and spine in response to certain triggers.  These triggers include sensual stimuli such as ever-so-gentle touches, feather tickles, smooth caresses, and soft sounds like babbling water, birds chirping, frogs croaking, rainfall, rustling leaves, tapping, whispering, white noise, etc.

The ASMR: What Is ASMR? Meaning, Definition, Benefits, and Trends (2021)

ASMR was first observed in 2007, and was originally developed as a technique to help people relax and fall asleep. Since then, the phenomenon has become popular online, with many content creators producing ASMR videos that feature various auditory stimuli.  Lately, these ASMR videos have added visual stimuli and have become increasingly sensuous and lusty, and have thus skyrocketed in popularity.

This post offers a survey of one of the most currently popular types of ASMR generating content: Girlfriend Role Play ASMR.

A Description of Girlfriend Role Play ASMR

The key characteristics of these videos include…

  • Breaking the fourth wall.
  • Scantily clad, soft, young, feminine women.
  • Auditory stimuli intended to provoke an ASMR.
  • Soft warm lighting, e.g. candles, christmas lights, etc.
  • Role playing intimacy.  Typical roles are girlfriend, wife, nurse, masseuse, etc.
  • The perception of altruistic, direct, non-threatening, sincere, undivided attention.
  • Labels and titles typically include the key words “ASMR”, “Cozy”, and “Role Play”.

In general, these videos depict close-up views of soft, young, feminine women, often dressed in negligees or other casually revealing clothing, with some appearing topless.  They often present themselves lying on a silk, satin, or fur-blanketed bed or couch, fully relaxed, as if bedding down for the night or waking up in the morning. They move slowly and sensually, often blowing air kisses, caressing their bodies, licking their lips, and other such sexually suggestive motions. 

ASMR sounds include giggling, humming lullabies, making wet mouth sounds, sighing heavily, and most notably, speaking in a soft or whispering voice. The verbal content expresses admiration, affirmation, appreciation, encouragement, gratitude, etc., saying, “I love you!”, “I miss you!”, etc., and innuendos of a shared sexual relationship, helplessness, submissiveness, vulnerability, and feminine charms in general.

They act, talk, and speak as if they are totally in love with the viewer.  They even have dilated pupils, which is an IOI of love!  (I wonder how they do that?)  Some scenes make it very easy to imagine she’s giving you a hand job, complete with a lusty gaze amid repetitive squipping or slapping sounds.

They appeal to the male-specific fantasy of Idealistic Love and One-itis.

  • “I’ll never give up on you.”
  • “I’ll never love anyone else but you.”
  • “I never knew love until I found you.”
  • “I believe we were destined to be together.”

The Fear Dynamic is evident as well.

  • “Please don’t leave.”
  • “Please don’t hurt me.”
  • “Will you stay with me?”
  • “I can’t live without you.”
  • “I’m so lonely without you.”
  • “I’m afraid you won’t come back.”

Most of these videos have tens of thousands of views, with many in the hundreds of thousands, and a few in the millions.

Some producers charge exorbitant fees for channel membership. For example, Junia Sounds (see video below) charges up to NT$6,400.00/month (~US$200/month) for a premium membership to her channel.

I can only guess that this type of content is feeding the emotional concupiscence of lonely single men who are too conscientious or too shy to do OnlyF@ns or traditional Pr0$t!tut!0n.

Conclusions

The rise of this type of media is significant precisely because it seeks to offer men appeasement and comfort, and it appeals directly to male desire, which stands in sharp contrast to the self-centered Girl Boss (GB) and Strong Independent Woman (SIW) stereotypes that have pervaded the media over the past few decades.

More broadly, I think the appearance of this type of media is an indirect result of MGTOW and men leaving the plantation. It indicates that younger women are no longer buying into the GB and SIW standards for womanhood.

The upside is that women are starting to pay attention to what kind of behavior men like in a woman, and they’re learning to implement their womanly charms in traditionally feminine ways that haven’t been emphasized since the 1960s (i.e. natural affection, kindness, sensuality, softness, vulnerability, etc.).

The downside is that this particular expression of feminine charm is entirely fantasy, and they’re only doing this for cash, clicks, and views. Worse, it is a mild form of Witchcraft, and is part of the current rise in Witchcraft.
