It’s V-Day, and countless little tragedies are playing out. Be grateful, single men, for we are spared the worst of it. For us, it is a day of Thanksgiving — we are those in grace today.

I saw this comment on our Eat Pray Love article just about as it came up, and I thought we all ought to reflect on it.

This is reality. This is what happens:

I realize this a really late post, but I couldn’t help it given my current situation.

I’m not afraid to say that I’m disgusted and deeply offended by the message and the victimization of the ex-husband. I can actually relate very much to what happened to him.

I think I saw a few pieces of this movie when my wife rented it or something, but it seemed terrible so I fell asleep or found something I enjoyed more to do with my time. However, looking back now I can’t believe the impact this movie has had on my wife.

We have two wonderful little boys and have been together for eight years, married for two of those now. Recently, she revealed that she didn’t feel the same way she used to feel about me anymore (i.e. “We’ve grown apart”). To me, this came completely out of the blue. I was happy and things were just normal and routine. I thought she was at least somewhat happy as well.

While she hasn’t stated that she wants a divorce as of yet, it certainly doesn’t feel very far off. She basically hit me with the “It’s not you, it’s me” line. She said that she needed to find herself and love herself before she could ever truly love someone else. Now she wants time and space. She recommended that I watch this movie to better understand where she is coming from.

I’m shocked. I’m devastated. I’m scared to death. The family I worked so hard to build and dreamed would always be together is now crumbling around me. And I don’t think there’s a thing I can do about it.

Is there no talking any sense into her? Why is it that if the rolls were reversed I would be a loser, a bum, and a deadbeat dad; yet she will be celebrated as “empowered” and “seeking enlightenment”?

I feel so bad for the ex-husband in the movie/novel. I know how bad it hurts. But they didn’t even have small children in “Eat Pray Love” though, right? That complicates the situation so much more and just really adds to the pain tremendously.

Whatever happened to working things out? What about the vows? “Through thick and thin?” “Til death do us part”?

-Mr. Bill

Rejoice, single men, but reserve a sympathetic thought for those afflicted by marriage today. They are our brothers, and even the beasts of burden deserve better than their fate.

Remember: There but for the grace of God…
