I work in mental health. The reasons for changing the way we talk about it are important. If you had ever had a patient become a victim of their worst possible idea to escape their pain then you wouldn’t be arguing that a self cannot be a victim of its actions for such pedantic reasons. Neutral language is best: she died of suicide, however, denying a person to be called a victim is a moral judgement that is shaming to the victim and their family.

I have heard this as well, even from my sister. The problem with this line of thinking is that the goals of social progress are incompatible with this adversarial system. This would be an unfair comparison for a number of reasons. In our society, the circumstances by which The Family Court system allows the children are raised by a single father tend to be far more extreme than the typical situation with a single mother.
