What I know is that 6 weeks is insufficient for many people to recover from pregnancy, adjust to living with a newborn, and cope with a stranger taking care of their child. Neighbors? A sense of community? I live in Boston. I don't even ask my neighbors to house-sit my cat. As a woman who had to suffer through years of sexual harassment, I'd like to chime in and say that this happens. I seriously considered changing careers because of it. I was lucky enough to find a great company with great people (with a large proportion of technical women) where this would simply not be tolerated, but that's actually rather rare.

Have you ever tried finding daycare on your commute that takes six week old infants? And do you really want to leave a six week old baby with strangers for 40 hours plus every week? Companies need to make it more realistic for moms to return to work if it's going to improve.
