If you ignored that I had put patriarchy in parentheses, would you still think I was wrong? I mean if you acknowledge that there are the same institutions blocking the goals of feminists and MRAs certainly that could be common ground, right? What do you take their respective goals to be?

So your first question is legitimate: how similar are these two movements? But I am afraid the examples you give get a little pissing contest-y. Similarly with your second question. A better way to ask how similar they really are would be to look at the larger institutions (e.g. patriarchy) that cause the problems for both groups. I think that is the common ground where people can begin to reconcile their differences and realize they are aiming for the same goal.

Why wouldn't power relations be at play? If a police officer tries to stop me as I am walking down the street I am a lot more likely than if it is just some citizen asking for change or the time. Why? Whether or not I think the police officer has any reason or right to stop me, he has a gun and plenty of ways to make my life miserable. Generally I don't think the random person I pass by has that kind of power.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
