I like a challenge :-) Thank you for support and your kind words. I started this thread in hopes of finding common ground, sparking debate and facilitating intellectual growth--not to offend people. I really do view this as a great source to keep informed on issues of Men's Rights. I respect the community and am glad to see that at least some of its members are receptive of me. Thank you again :)

Seems you are a fan of linking that page, are you sure this is the correct forum for you? You might be more comfortable in another community that support anonymous internet bullying and a condemnation of individual thought and debate.

Thank you for directing me to that link, I read several of the comments and I can see where the thread went off track. You have a lot of great ideas but you have to keep in mind the forum that you are posting in. I think the reason I have had, as you said, a nominally positive response is that I have tried to maintain a emotional distance to engage in academic debate. I am also a student of Men's Rights with genuine interest and an investment in the issues. I came into this as open-minded as I h…

These are variations of questions I was hoping to poll this groups opinions on. Especially 1 and 3. I am very concerned with the methods we use to socialize our children to understand their expected gender roles; I want to study the American education system but I have more experience studying the gender socialization and bias present in popular culture and the mass media. These are medium that both reflect us and and influence us. Thank you so much for your honest, open-minded and critical comm…

Currently? I am more concerned with supporting Men's Rights and their organizations than attacking these specific feminist groups directly. I am very critical of them but I find that if you focus all of your effort screaming at and kicking a brick wall, you don't get very far. Instead, I chose to put positive energy into a cause I feel very passionate about, advocacy of Men's Rights.

This made me sick. I have commented and condemned whoever this is my I assure you that this is not me. The imposer also did a pretty crappy job attempting to be me. They don't even attempt to replicate my writing style. They don't even use Oxford commas! This type of article is exactly what I don't stand for. I really hope no one here posted this to discredit me, am generally pretty trusting, so I will give the benefit of the doubt

When I was growing up, I was very active in speech, theater, choir and the arts in general. Though that's kind of dorky, I had lots of friends and received a lot of support from the school and administration... I have a brother four years younger than me who took my lead and got into theater when he was 11 years old. For the next 7 years, he faced such public ridicule and bullying from his peers that it caused him to be placed on suicide watch. He was beaten, had his pants pulled down in the caf…

I have studied the issues facing men in America (and globally) hence my career path. But, as I stated in my above post, all inequality results in suffering. Again, this is not a competition. So, if you want to me admit the suffering of men is greater than that of women, I will never do that. Just as you will never find me claiming that the suffering of women is greater than that of men. However, I respect your opinion on the subject. If you can not respect my perspective, that is your choice.

I did not mean to offend. I meant to draw a parallel. If it offends you, I will not call you it. But, in my opinion, it is a compliment. Shakes

I don't intend to put a lot of emphasis on semantics, I just like observing and I have always found this interesting. I've been know to defend my position on feminism by saying "Yes, I do believe that men should have the same rights as women." and you wouldn't believe how angry people get (men and women alike) just by switching two words around. Also agreeing that horrible things have been done in the name of women's rights

Again, lots of agreement on my part. One of my biggest pet peeves in the importance ordering of the words 'men' and 'women' when talking about rights. For example, for many people, these are completely different sentences. "Women should have rights on par with those of men" "Men should have rights on par with those of women"

I agree with this statement on so many levels. We are always in flux, movements are never perfect, just look at the state of our political realm to see that. (But, you could also argue that people who are sexist against women have views that could also be very inline with the men's right movement)

I have read the faq. If I wanted to go to other websites, I could have. The reason I wanted to post here was that I really respect this community as a whole. I have seen lots of posts I didn't agree with. I'm sure you have seen posts on here you didn't agree with as well, being an independent thinker. But, I wanted to open the discussion. Thank you for your insightful and respectful comment. And, I also really respect your for-going of labels. Unfortunately for sociologists, labels are kind of necessary. Its kind of about noticing, studying and documenting patterns :-(

Awesome. I love blue and Wombats so I will be a part of your future. I understand where you are coming from. I certainly don't remember being indoctrinated to hate all men, I must have blocked that part of my education out. But, it must be true. And also, you can't just ignore that the Women's Movement was relevant and important in its historical context. So, you are suggesting that if there is a problem in an organization you should abandon the thing and let it continue on its path of self-destruction instead of challenging the status quo and presenting alternatives? Just let the 'majority of feminists' (I would love to see some statistics on this, I think we might all be surprised) continue on the past everyone here seems so against. Instead of blaming them and writing them off, include them in the discussion. You have supporters. It doesn't ha…

As I keep stating, I am attempting to reclaim the term to its original definition. And also to open discussion. Thank you for participating. Also, I appreciate your sourcing but Wikipedia is not credible. Here is a link to the first page of one of the first feminist article of male rights I read. However, like most scholarly source you have to buy the rest of the article if you want to read it :-/ http://jmm.sagepub.com/content/3/4/405.extract

I don't want to argue about who has it worse because I believe that inequality for either gender results in suffering for both. I am not denying that there are many male rights issues, hence my interest in this community. This is not a competition of suffering. I was under the impression that the men's rights movement was to create rights for men equal to the rights of women.

I agree, responsibilities should absolutely be added to that first bullet point. I would argue that many of the major feminist topics you referenced did have a place in history. They come from thousands of years of societies developing certain gender roles. Gender Studies is a relatively young subject (Men's Studies is just in its infant stages in academia), and legal changes usually follow academic study. I would argue that each of those laws were important pieces of legislature--in their time …

Most definitions advocate a position--usually of the person writing the position ;) I will admit that I am mostly a critical theorist when it comes to sociology, but all (credible) sociologist will admit that no one theory is completely comprehensive. The feminism belief you reference is part of the social inequality school of thought which does state that there is an innate inequality between genders but current scholarship is becoming more equal in even that it does acknowledge that inequality…

Here is a small quote from my statement of purpose to my graduate school,(it is a little vague and candy coated but most entrance essays have to be): "My main areas of interest lay in the cultural representations of masculinity and the changing cultural interpretations of the male role. While the male perspective is often the default setting through which all subjects are viewed, it is often invisible, unacknowledged and under-studied. The past half-century in America has seen a rise in social m…

More equality benefits everyone. Why does everyone insist on the theory of limited goods? There is enough equality to go around, we don't have to compete for it. I may not get to decide who calls themselves feminist but I do get to apply my education and the critical reviews of the work of these anti-male misandrist 'feminist' in order to realize that they do not fit the scholarship of true feminism. I do not claim to be "good" or "bad". I am simply stating where I stand on a topic.

Its okay, a lot of the stuff out there is crap. I know I'm selling something a lot of people won't buy but I just want people to think and be aware of alternative ways of thinking. You were right in saying women's studies. Most don't even acknowledge men exist except to rape and oppress women.

It is unacceptable on all accounts. These roles are a direct result to thousands of years of gender role development. I just replied to that in my post to SpeakToTheSky. What I was suggesting is that both men and women have their boxes that society tries to keep us contained in the: the difference? The box that we keep women in is slowly becoming bigger and less well defined while the one for men gets smaller and more strict. We are on the same side here.

Scapegoating is the word you are looking for. I have a feeling we would get along very splendidly. A sociologist always needs a good economist in her corner. ;-)
/r/MensRights11/04/12 06:55 PM

But then how would be have discussion? The reason to reclaim a word is to engage people with different definitions in discussion. Otherwise you alienate them all together and there is no room for growth and changing of minds. Most of the 'feminists' who hate men are not feminists. They do hide behind that title to justify it just like calling yourself a priest does not automatically make you moral, though the implication is there.

Like I said, I'm trying to reclaim the word (mostly from the untrue feminists). It has such a stigma to it that the lies turn into repeated 'facts'. I totally agree that those are unequal issues. But you can also flip the genders and compare similarly 'insignificant' issues of male rights to similarly 'large' issues of female rights. That is what I meant by relative.
/r/MensRights11/04/12 06:47 PM

I absolutely agree with you on the point that there are very few instances of 'evil patriarchical dominating regimes". As a student of anthropology, I know that gender roles, and thus their position (and power, a very different thing) in society, orientated from biological and social needs that were relevant to particular societies as any given time. There are four main theories as to why the majority of societies throughout history have been ruled by men, all tying back into the creation of gen…

Excuse me? But are you actually suggesting that the fact that I plan on dedicating my life to studying and promoting Men's Rights a purely a benefit to me? If you read what you just requoted it says "men and women" as in both It sickness me when a woman does something that harms our society in the same way it would if a man did it but the reason I am an advocate of Men's Rights is because the punishments are often unequal in those situations. I knew what he meant ;-) I've been around reddit a few times. I've also noticed those posts on here and that's why I wanted finally unlurk, to offer a counter position and to prove that there are true feminist advocates of Men's Rights out there.

The 'feminists' you are talking about aren't true feminists (hence my post here). And, I would like to point out that the size of all issues is relative. What may seem very insignificant to one person can mean the world to another. But, I agree that as activists, men and women both need to be more vocal in 'fighting' for equality and I would argue that the best way to win that fight is by fight together against inequality in all forms and the best way to do that is by learning all we can and spr…

And I would be inclined to agree with you on most points. Again, a lot of derision comes from over-extending terminology. I was not implying that all men are patriarchs but that the word patriarch means "male control". And while many things in our society are currently matri-centric, you must also acknowledge that there are only a certain acceptable 'matri-centric' world-view which is currently promoted by both men and women, just as the acceptable gender roles for men are promoted by both men a…

Please, do keep your skepticism, its often only the skeptics that keep questioning. But, please also keep an open mind. The marginalization of the issues you mentioned will play key roles in my research. That is why this community is so interesting and important to me. Besides researching, publishing and teaching impressionable college minds the ideas of Men's and Women's Rights side by side? I engage my 'lying sisters' (and just as many misinformed men) in debate and correct their assumption that "Feminism" and feminism are the same thing and the inequality exists for both genders but only one gender ever gets any attention. And then I deliver swift roundhouse kicks about their head and neck
