like the response to the pic didn't annihilate your pride. Maybe if someone pointed out that her tits are somehow halfway down her torso when she’s presumably in her 20s, that’ll make her give up on this pathetic ego damage control exercise?

This is the same journalist who broke the ‘97%’ statistic during the Sarah Everard uproar recently. Despite the fact that the study cited doesn’t make any reference to this at all. Every article I have been able to find that mentions ‘97%’ cites her original (and incorrect) article. It’s a shame that reporting this biased and disingenuous is a thing in a publication that has such a huge reach.

Lmao Oh good, we’re off to a mature start... IT. IS. AN .EARNINGS. GAP. DOWN. TO. VARIOUS. FACTORS. Correct. Then what on earth are you arguing about? For goodness sake, this is exactly what I said right at the beginning of this discussion. I never once said that some of those factors WEREN’T ‘the motherhood penalty’ etc... I even stated that maternity leave was one of the factors involved! I stated that the feminist idea of the wage gap (women getting paid 70% than men do for the same job and o…

Next time, I will only post studies that explicitly support my position, instead of assuming you will read all of them and fill in the blanks about the point I am making about a persistent wage gap I would hope so, then we can ignore this meandering and pointless argument where you change your definition of the phrase were are discussing to mean the one I was using in the first place. such a source DOES discredit my argument Finally... The first study I posted was the first study I have in my personal research document on various political questions, including the wage gap. Maybe you should read these before you use them as evidence? I sent you the first 3 in my document, I don’t care about order as much as you. Well you should. If the first piece of evidence you post disproves your point then it damages your overall credibility. Why are you posting a study that goes against you at all? And if you’re going to pretend that read…

I have a document where I’ve collected thousands of studies on various topics. Not all of them agree with eachother. I try to have access to any and all information. That study discussed ONE SPECIFIC POSITION IN ONE FIELD. Let’s be clear, every other study, big meta analysis, etc. finds a real wage gap. Then why was the first study you posted one that disagrees with your point and agrees with mine? What’s the point in collecting studies with the right sounding titles if you’re not even going to …

Oh dude come on, did you even read the studies you cited? Literally the second sentence in the abstract of the first study says... We use confidential administrative data on bus and train operators from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to show that the weekly earnings gap can be explained by the workplace choices that women and men make. Women value time away from work and flexibility more than men, taking more unpaid time off using the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and wo…

Interestingly, I checked YouGov, and the day before that Guardian article was published, another survey with a slightly higher N (1443) was published that showed 52% of UK women had suffered harassment, which is considerably lower than the 71pc figure in the UN women report. Same here. This is the study which I at first assumed must be the one used by the Guardian article (although I don’t claim I searched for more than an hour or so). That’s partly why I was glad to see it posted, though it’s d…

I believe the Guardian broke the survey (or the statistic) first. The article was written by Gender and Equality reporter, Alexandra Topping. It certainly seems as there has been some disingenuous ‘cherry picking’ of numbers to come up with 97%.

Given then that there is some public harassment of women and girls, there is nothing wrong with stating the purpose of your research project upfront is to try and determine how bad the problem is. Fair point, will edit the above. How is this a false premise? It may simply refer to issues where women are disproportionately affected, which...is a thing that happens, depending on the issue. Perhaps I’ve phrased it badly. My point was that the study seems to set out to prove a presupposed point, rat…

After a slightly less brief look at the study, here are some of the points that jumped out. Please let me know if I have mis-read or misinterpreted any points and I will edit to avoid misleading anyone who might not have the time to read the study themselves. These definitions are included when the study states that… '71% of women of all ages in the UK …

Didn’t you read the post? Like someone else commented, it’s projection (or at least I think it is). People who respond this way see things as inherently gendered, so when someone makes even the slightest mention of men they automatically view it as a challenge. It doesn’t even occur to them that it might not be.

Ok, so to be clear, the wage gap is real. We know that, multiple studies have shown it. It does get misrepresented by the media, but it is real. 100%. Completely incorrect, almost exactly incorrect. Basic math (never mind the actual studies) show that the wage gap (the idea that men and women get different pay for the same job) is completely wrong. It is illegal. If it was true then companies would be falling over themselves to hire a female workforce that could do the same job for less pay, or …

I did say earlier that your concerns are valid. I’ve also seen other posts in this sub saying it’s affecting people’s mental health so I apologise. Not a problem. As for your colleague incident, don’t get into these conversations at work. If someone is making you uncomfortable by trying to bait you into it, raise it with HR. It’s genuinely depressing how many instances there are of genuine hardships for men that people only find out if they research themselves. I’d be surprised if once this is over, any of my social circle know the increased male Covid mortality rate.

The first time a feminist (one that I regarded as genuine anyway) explained it to me, she had spent the first hour trying to explain why feminism ‘was for everybody’. Then when I has managed to persuade her that maybe it’s wasn’t as clear cut as that she said, ‘well that’s why we have ‘intersectional feminism’. I live in the UK and I have a large family and social group and these hateful people aren’t represented here. No one in my family is stupid enough to discriminate against 50% of the planet or to blame problems on that group I’m fortunate enough to be in the same situation. I totally agree. The way to change people’s mind is one by one. A male friend maybe who you are chatting to when the topic comes up, point out how insane it is that someone with a position in government publicly called for you to not be allowed outside after dark. Point out how upsetting it is that close friends have started posting online that you are inherently violent and need to police your friends otherwise you will almost inevitably attack someone. Intersectionality is the idea that people from different backgrounds have different experiences and feelings based on those differing backgrounds. It’s an attempt to include more people more effectively by acknowledging more diverse experiences. The problem with it is that a) it only ever includes men as part of some other disadvantaged group, the male part is always demoted to secondary importance, and b) the logical conclusion of this way of thinking is that everyone is unique and can’t be lum…

the “men are killed by men” retort to the fact that men are victim to starnger violence far more than women is nonsensical. Not three days ago a women was charged with the murder of an old lady in the UK, it didn’t make the news much beyond the article I just linked. Next time someone bring up the ‘murdered by men’ argument, ask them if this poor old women’s death is irrelevant and unimportant because she was killed by another woman.

Intersectionality is their way of trying to prove that they include everyone in feminism (because they know that ‘vanilla’ feminism doesn’t). Notice how any male segment of intersectionality always has some sort of caveat next to it, it can never just be men. It has to be * member of disadvantaged group * who happens to be a man. The male part is always secondary. (Edited, because I dunno WTF my keyboard did at some points there...)

I don’t think it’s fair to generalise though I totally understand how it can spring to mind as a knee jerk reaction to the toxicity that is floating around right now - there a plenty of sensible women but as per usual the sensible people are drowned out by the loud idiots. I know, and I don’t let the actions of morons (no matter how numerous) affect my views of a group. It’s an illuminating thing though, the facade of peacefulness is paper thin for some people.

Absolutely. But I think doing it online is just so exposed to the usual tactics of ‘you are minimising us’ etc... The ideas need a place to incubate before they will be able to withstand the inevitable backlash, and the only way to incubate online is in ‘safe places’ like here. The people we want to reach aren’t here. Maybe mass posting to conversation topics could work instead? I think that a hashtag campaign would be doomed to failure, I’m extremely sorry to say. Our best chance is to ‘convert’ one by one. This whole situation has shone a spotlight on a lot of misandrist ideas that people won’t have been aware of. Speak to a friend, one to one, informally. Casually bring up some of the contradictions in the conversation around this murder, let them know that it is ok to think ‘against the grain’. Let them know It’s ok to believe that you are not evil for being a man. …

I agree. The only realistic way to make something like this work is to have a significant proportion of the male population actively taking part, like the ‘opposition’. Unfortunately I just don’t see that happening. Too many people are under the thumb, don’t care, or don’t dare take the risk of being ostracised. Our big disadvantage is we don’t think of ourselves as a collective, women do.

I posted my relief at this eloquent statement on another post. Thank god there are sensible people with the courage to speak out about this nonsense. Yup, ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’. One of the the things I hope comes from this is that more and more people see the contradictory opinions that society holds about men. Should we leave women alone because they are grown human beings with agency and intelligence? Or should we be the ‘protectors’ in dangerous situations? You can’t have both, or change your mind depending on how you feel at the time. I also hope that it demonstrates that a lot of ‘feminists’ are barely disguised misandr…
