Thank you u/ResponsibleAd2541 and thank you for the question!

Hi u/scott195 thank you for sharing this with me, it is very interesting and powerful to reflect upon. The study is also open to men who have thoughts/feelings/plans of suicide, as well as men that have attempted, so if you would be interested in taking part, it sounds like we could learn a lot from your perspective - though no pressure to do so. Take care, and thank you again for sharing this insight. Susie

Hi u/ResponsibleAd2541 thank you for this excellent question which is an important one and which someone else also asked about on another sub I posted on. Sampling is always complicated when you don't have the budget to do proper random sampling, and also when you are studying a hard to reach population. It is hard to get a truly representative data sample for people who have thoughts and feelings about suicide, as people are not always open about these behaviours, sometimes because it is not sa…

Hi u/XxFIRE_GUYxX Sorry for only replying to you now, I missed this comment. Thank you so much for taking the time to take the survey. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, the survey is only for men aged 18 and over so I won't be able to include your data in the official analysis. However, I will review all the answers submitted by men under 18 as this will help me see some of the issues that may be going on for younger men, and will potentially help inform future research work, so your answer…

Make this post blow up! Finally an academic wants to show the world what we've been fighting for and have been saying on this subreddit. I did my part and finished this survey, liked and commented. See you in hot guys! Hi u/SmallStepsFirst Sorry to be only replying to your message now, I somehow missed this comment when you posted it. Yes, the survey is open until October and then will take a couple of months to analyse and write up, then there is another couple of months wait as you submit it t…

Hi u/BCRE8TVE! How are you? I was just going back through the reddit threads I posted my survey in, to collect the feedback from users to share with my collaborators as so many interesting points were raised by people - including yourself. And I discovered this amazing message from you that I somehow missed when you originally posted it. Thank you so much for sharing and sorry I did not reply at the time, I missed this completely. So many fascinating points you raise, especially around the diffe…

Thank you for sharing this. I know it feels like you can’t express what you are feeling but what you’ve written and have expressed here makes total sense, is very eloquent and insightful about yourself and your behaviours. I think you may have more insight that you realise. In some ways I relate a lot to the experience you are describing. I grew up with a lot of emotional suppression which lead to a lot of emotional detachment. I found it very difficult to describe what I was feeling and I spent…

Hi, I am very sorry to know that you recently attempted suicide and I am sorry to know that you did not experience any meaningful support from the women in the ER, though I am glad to hear that good care was given by the men there. Obviously, we have never met and I don’t know what has happened in your life, but I know a little of how much pain can be present to bring someone to attempt suicide and I am very sorry that has been your reality. I can imagine life has caused you to hurt in complex a…

Yes, this is a fascinating and moving insight. Thank you for sharing. The cyclical relationship between feelings of depression, expressions of anger, alienation of support which can then increase feelings of depression, anger, alienation, is very moving to think about. I have learned so much from the various Reddit threads I have been posting on. It has been very helpful. Thank you and I hope you find some good support outlets at your new college. I know new beginnings and new environments can b…

Hi, thank you for sharing this. I am saddened to know that you feel this way, though your comment echoes with the sentiment men in my life have expressed to me. It is very concerning and I am sorry that it makes you feel hopeless. I know what it is like to have a highly stigmatised aspect of your core identity that society wants to burden shame upon. You have to fight very hard not to internalise those toxins and let it undermine your sense of self and dignity. If you believe yourself to be a go…

Hi @durir thank you so much for letting me know and I am so sorry it has been crashing for you. That is very frustrating. Were you able to complete it in the end? Can I ask what device you were using to complete it on? Thanks for your help and sorry again for the issues.

Not at all u/Muki47, primarily because I have 3 brothers who all have different struggles with their mental health. As their sister, I can see the different cultural advantages life has afforded me as a woman compared to them as men, and I am troubled by how narrow the social space to have conversations about the reality of many men's lived experience is becoming. I want to contribute what I can to change this.

Muki47 u/Muki47 I don't want to disappoint you, but I only get a small bit of external funding, I am mostly self-funding my PhD studies because this issue is personally important to me... but hopefully, more funding will come 🙏

This is such a lovely message u/BCRE8TVE thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to share such lovely sentiments. Yes, learning is a wonderful gift, and personally in my own mental health journey, finding work that feels extremely meaningful and gives me purpose and my brain the chance to grow and explore is a real gift. I hope in the future you find a way to go back to studying if you want to. I have to say I have been very moved by hearing sentiments such as you express when you say…

Hi u/SurpriseFlimsy1454 I was reading a paper today from the Australia Men's Health Forum about the need for a specialised male-focused suicide prevention strategy, and some of the content chimed with what you wrote in your post and I wanted to share: "While the gender stereotype that “men don’t get help” is commonly presented as a key risk factor for male suicide, there is less focus on ensuring that services get better at giving help to men." and also: "Research on gender stereotypes has found…

Thank you u/BCRE8TVE and for your additional message above. It is really helpful and insightful for me to read people's feedback on the survey so I appreciate you taking the time. The survey was actually developed based on a systematic review of all the qualitative work on male suicide since 2000 - so interviews and focus groups with men who have attempted suicide and people bereaved by male suicide. From this work key drivers for suicidal feeling emerged - of which many of the factors you menti…

Hi u/SurpriseFlimsy1454 thank you for sharing this. First of all, I am really sorry that you have experienced so many shaming or diminishing experiences in trying to seek help. That is very sad to know and I hope it doesn't deter you from seeking support because there are compassionate and intelligent people out there. I feel that there is actually much alignment between our views. The survey questions focus on how men feel about certain aspects of life, but the intention is to place that within…

Hi u/SubzeroPrunusPersica thank you for sharing your thoughts. We are actually deeply aligned on the issues you have raised here. My work is very much interested in how social and cultural factors impact the psychology of men. My position is not that men are more likely to have mental health issues because of something wrong in their minds, but very much about how men's psychological struggles are often natural responses to social and cultural pressures, and that we have a collective responsibil…

Thanks u/BloomingBrains and I am sorry to hear that people have previously responded by calling you a creep. That makes me sad to know. Nothing in your message seemed creepy to me. I read it as a genuine and moving desire to have intimacy and connection, which is a universal desire and one that we should all be able to empathise with and one that you should be supported in trying to navigate and access. I really wish you the best and I am sorry if you have previously been shamed in any way for s…

hI u/Sirhugh66 and u/shittypassword thanks for sharing this feedback. This is very useful for me to know and potentially a real shame because I imagine a lot of the men that would be mistrusting of the survey are men I would want to reach with the work. I totally acknowledge why some men might be suspicious of intentions. It is hard to know how to navigate that. For myself, the reason I do this work is primarily because I have 3 brothers, as well as many male friends, who I see struggling with a…

Thank you u/BloomingBrains this is really useful feedback and I will absolutely bear this in mind for future research. It will be interesting if it comes out a lot in the survey results. We all crave connection and intimacy and I am very sorry that you are feeling thwarted in being able to achieve this. I know it sounds trite but the only thing we can ever really control is ourselves. If you like yourself and think you are a likeable person this is a great foundation for existence and the only t…

Thank you for your message u/DarthMeow504 I agree there is much, much, much more that unites us, but it is easy for all of us to get lost sometimes in the noise of division. We need to make sure we give space to everyone's pain and struggles, that is the only way we will create sustainable solutions to problems. But we are not very good at holding and navigating complexity in our social discussions and so it can easily descend into blanket generalisations. We get disconnected from the fact that …

Thank you u/BCRE8TVE for this really useful feedback, this is very helpful. In the future, I would like to co-design psychometric measures for male suicide with people who have lived experience so that the language and questions are more reflective of their lived reality. So suggestions like the one you make are really useful for me to bear in mind. Thank you. And I completely agree that male suicide is criminally understudied and underfunded. That's why I am pushing hard to get this survey comp…

Thank you u/McNultyLikesJameson for carrying out the survey, I really appreciate it, and I am glad that even if it was emotional, that it was also cathartic and helped expose some thoughts that aren't serving you. I wish you more and more constructive thoughts in the future.

Thank you u/MrElderwood I really appreciate it. I hope it wasn't too distressing. It's always morally a bit tricky how you balance trying to establish a richness of insights with a survey, without asking questions that are going to be too unsettling or distressing. I am very grateful that you took the time to share your experiences.
