As a graduate student in engineering, I agree with your initial concern. There are not many women in STEM fields, seemingly. But that gap is closing. In the comments section it mentions caltech. On the Caltech wiki: "In fall 2008, the freshman class was 42% female, a record for Caltech's undergraduate enrollment."
