One of her best-known quotes is something to the effect that being considered one of the most beautiful women in the world "has spared [her] nothing" in terms of being mistreated by men.

IIRC unless there was a different post, it was a man who thought his (biracial) gf's hair maintenance routine was silly and unnecessary so he took her microfiber towel out of her suitcase when they went to visit his family. Last we heard of them, she took some space from him, possibly dumped him. Comments unanimously declared him TA.

From what I have observed, these kinds of declarations are an act, triangulating you (woman not of his ethnicity) with women of his ethnicity. Marriage to such men's way of thinking is transactional, more about social standing and economic advantage than 'love.' He can hate them all he wants, he will still marry one for status and family and community approval. Just that unprompted rant about how much he "hates" women of his own ethnicity is motivation enough to hit EJECT. You're supposed to fal…

I just vaguely remember from eighth-grade health class or somewhere, that a man can only use the pipes for one thing at a time, and one function shuts off when the other is in use. I suspect that forcing it could potentially cause damage.

The book and the movie are from the 70s; the more things change the more they stay the same. I was too young to get into Studio 54, shall we say, but I remember reading a lot of articles and what have you at that time that promoted a precursor to what we now call "hookup culture."

It's been normalized in the culture, all these articles and TV shows and movies (written by whom?) sell this as what the hip, modern people are doing. I remember running into this in my teens/20s and thinking, if that's what's "normal," I think I'll stay weird. This was a couple of decades ago, social media was not a thing and the worst was yet to come.

Marrying an American woman is the dream for so many men living in foreign countries. The woman is a means to an end. It's the whole idea of going to America where they can get rich, or at least be seen as such back home. They will ditch the American woman as soon as they can do so without losing the residency/green card.

I would leave that word out of it, especially when traveling -- a lot of non-English speakers don't understand anything but the literal meaning of the f-word, so they may choose to interpret it literally. Or they have not studied English to the level where they know anything about phrasal verbs.

There's something wrong with men who say they're "intrigued" by a woman. Specifically that word. Many women in the older generations, and in some traditional cultures, still think it's essential to have a husband and children. This doesn't mean they can't get their minds around anything else, necessarily. I was just at a function where I was seated at a table with covered, traditional, married women from Eastern Turkey. They of course asked me about my husband (none) and children (also 0) and I said to them, you know how it is, if you have a good husband, things are great, but if he's bad, …

That's a mind-blower, because men in the Middle East triangulate Russian women against women of their own ethnicities, fetishizing blond hair and blue eyes. So for them the "beautiful Russian girls" are the prize.

Although by comparison with most of the other couples, they seem relatively low-drama and well-adjusted, Kenny seems dismissive of Mexican cultural norms, and his near-total lack of effort to learn Spanish is increasingly annoying. There is a generational element to this as well, as Kenny once said something to the effect that he was out and proud before Armando was even born.

High heels and long fingernails began as class signifiers, as did many other "beauty" indicators. If your heels make it difficult to walk, well then you must have servants and you don't have to move around much. If your fingernails are long and manicured, you must be so wealthy and pampered that you don't do anything for yourself. Being fat and having pale skin are also considered beautiful in some cultures with this subtext.

This gets us into a whole other intersectional topic, the fact that most women of African descent have to straighten our hair (with heat or chemicals) to get it to look like the desired 'long hair,' which is based on whiteness as the norm, the default and the ideal. Dangerous, time-consuming and expensive. Or buy some fake hair, or real hair that some other woman somewhere cut off and sold. (TBH a lot of the longer natural hairstyles are also a PITA that require a lot of product and maintenance …
