the problem is not if it's real or not. The problem lies when you assert that dating/marrying up is exclusively women and it is merely a female biological trait. i dunno this thing exist in westerns society or not, but in my country indonesia, there is a term/slang "matre" (means materialistic/golddiggers). Originally there is a term "cewek matre" (materialistic woman) which used to depict the women who are with their boyfriend/spouse only for the money/materialistic reasons.
