When I volunteered years ago I got to know the personal histories of a number of broken men. Often on the street, drug and alcohol problems, mental illness. Every single one had a history of abuse like this. A few talked about it with me as well. I had no fucking idea. I had to use shelters a few times in the past. Men's shelters are quite basic in my city. Nothing very pleasant, that's for sure. It's as much about cost because there are so many men who need to use them. ​ Ever see a women's shelter? Fuck, they're like homes. About the same amount of money is allocated to each but the men's allocation have to cover over three times as many people.
