Kinda makes me wish we'd gone metric.

P.S.: Ironically, the man in my friend circle with the most complicated life (married, 5 kids in private school) is an orthodox Jew. I don't know how he does it.

I particularly like the minimalist paragraph. Thanks. :)

I appreciate all the thoughtful answers. I hadn't thought much about how the definition may be manipulated by others to serve their selfish purposes -- that's an important caution. I'm particularly excited to be reminded to read Marcus Aurelius -- that's going to the top of my list. Cheers!

Fair enough. But what's your answer? Or are you suggesting we should be uninterested in that, because we are unsure whether you're a competent judge?

I'd like to give you an upvote. Done!

Outstanding advice. I would add only that I've found it fruitful to constantly explore & expand my horizons -- geographically and intellectually. Willfully get out of your comfort zone on a regular basis. It will accelerate your growth and give you fresh perspective.

It has meaning to OP and, at this moment, at least 237 upvoters. Everyone's in their own place and finding the wisdom they need at the time. Ever looked back on something you used to think was profound, but now seems trite? Great -- you've grown. Onward!

I'm not digging it. I like my usual combo of lots of social interaction during the day, and lots of solitude on nights & weekends. All solitude all the time -- particularly while confined in the city -- is not great.

Gene Autry, "Don't Fence Me In" (implied singledom) Fleetwood Mac, "Go Your Own Way" (2d person perspective) "Happily" is of course the hard part here, given the traditional viewpoints typically represented in pop culture. Will have to think some more on this!

Hormones, dopamine, social conditioning, inherited beliefs &/or dysfunction, inertia, fear of change & the unknown, fear of confrontation, fear of being alone with oneself, the hassles of unwinding intertwined finances & social networks ... etc. I even know one couple that I believe loves to fight. It's practically foreplay for them. They don't feel fully alive until they're pushing against something.

Interesting! What's your understanding of the origin / derivation of the term?

I didn't either, until quite recently. I thought it was derived from "simpering/to simper". Maybe it was retrofitted with the acronym?

The argument is that "Sucker Idolizing Mediocre Pussy" is condescending and negative toward all women, as it reduces all of them to average sex objects (esp. in combination with AWALT).

"All isms are doctrines. All doctrines are demanding. Therefore, all isms are demanding.": Syllogism. Can we at least keep euphemism? I'm a big fan of euphemism. And I think it works for most people.

In my experience (or head), accumulating wealth is meaningless in and of itself. It's what you want to do with it (if anything) that matters. Personally I never wanted to spend time or mental energy managing significant wealth or material possessions. When I chased money and property, it was really to try to impress women. These days I'm driven by the desires to explore, have adventures, learn new things, be of service, enjoy good friends, make music, and be at peace.

This is a good idea also. I have a Bohemian brother who has been in and out of the working world his entire life, while pursuing creative work in between. He's not set up for an opulent retirement, but he's learned to live on very little, quite happily. So he's content with his choices.

Another question is, what kind of social and cultural life do you value? If you are off grid, can you still spend time with people who share your values and passions? Can you do community service that you care about? Can you access high and low culture events and amenities as desired?

Very personal decision. Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one, so how do you prefer to spend each precious day? Personally I find comfort and accumulation more empty with every passing year. But YMMV.

Hmm. How would war boost fertility rates back to sustainable levels (including recovery from a big mortality hit in a major war)? How would war create a more functional culture for steady reproduction?

Hmm, crickets. Will it be up to conservative Islam to save humanity? Is it up to the task?

The ROK writer seems to believe humans can avoid extinction. My question is, how? What plausible chain of events can reverse the demographic freefall of most advanced countries? Or at least support stabilization at a lower population? If modern gender roles/expectations are an essential part of the problem, what's the realistic fix?

I've been thinking about the need for (or at least benefits of) affordable shared living arrangements for retired men as well. Something simpler and more communal than the luxury facilities coveted by women and some high-income men.

This is great advice. Some people have trouble finding their sense of mission, but I think we are built, psychologically, to try to leave a positive legacy. We're not fully happy until we feel that we have.

I understand. Court dates suck, and PTSD is real. Be kind to yourself and find ways to shake/purge the negative feelings when they come -- intense workouts, meditation, massage, a nice drive in the country, primal screams, a great meal, or all of the above at once. :) Rooting for you!

The best revenge is to live well. Even better than revenge is forgiveness -- of both others and yourself. 45 is young, and 25 years is a lot of time to enjoy life, if you can spend it in a positive mindset. Let the past go. Practice gratitude for everything you DO have. Cherish quality time with your kids, but also with yourself, with nature, and with new & old friends with whom you share passions. Learn new things, make and improve things with your hands, explore and beautify the world, be of s…

This, and the fact that the entire world wants G8-type consumption standards, means that the focus of public policy should be mitigation and adaptation, not prevention. And could the media please stop with the sensationalistic "most __ on record" nonsense, when they're referring only to observations recorded in roughly the last 150 years? It's a geologic nanosecond.

56, never married, no kids, parents gone. No regrets yet, life has been and is very good. I happen to have several similarly situated friends from decades back. We found each other early, before we ever knew we were (or would become) MGTOW. But I also have good friends who are divorced -- there's no shortage of them! Just follow your passions, seek out others who share them, do some form of community service that speaks to you. "Lonely" need never be an issue. Embrace and enjoy life!

I've studied Human Geography. The standard disciplinary explanation for Stage 5 of the Demographic Transition Model (negative growth excluding immigration) is women prioritizing education & careers, and having ready access to birth control. There's no recognition of men's choices being a factor. But I guess you can't document something you're not looking for.

The courts have ruled that no civil liberty is absolute. Gun ownership is subject to some government regulation (background checks, waiting periods), as is speech (libel/slander, obscenity, sedition, etc.). Could Congress legally tell a privately owned social media platform that it must allow a similar scope of speech? Probably a Commerce Clause question, or in an even bigger stretch, public "airwaves". I don't see it happening under this SCOTUS, but if/when it shifts left, maybe.

Reddit has violated the ideal of open expression and robust debate. But not the First Amendment, which, like the rest of the Constitution, restricts government only, not private parties.

You can dig yourself a hole and spend significant energy and time climbing out. Or you can skip the hole and spend all that energy and time climbing a mountain. No-brainer for me.

I understand your perspective. But I've learned from personal experience is that what you eat can make impulse control (& caloric intake) either a constant, unsustainable struggle (see carb addiction & blood sugar swings) or relatively easy (via keto pathway & adequate fat intake). This may not be true for everyone, but I think a lot of people in advanced societies are fighting this, and don't even know it. The broader cultural influences matter as well. What foods are constantly offered & adver…

I appreciate hard work and discipline. But I don't think we can blame the obesity epidemic entirely on character issues. There are big systemic problems, among them the increasingly sedentary nature of work & life, increasing urbanization/separation from nature, a food & beverage industry & culture that promotes highly processed and high-carb foods and alcohol, and medical providers who ignore or misunderstand good nutrition. In this context, staying fit requires not just constant vigilance & ef…
