It's more than that in the US. 6% of American adults are veterans (probably more like 10% for men) and I would think pretty much everyone that's served in the last 25 years has done a tour in Afghanistan or Iraq. Whether each of their specific actions qualify as "fighting in a war" is maybe debatable but they were still active military in a combat zone.

Child custody should be 50/50 with no support either way other than in circumstances where one of the parents is clearly unfit (eg. a felon or someone with serious substance abuse issues) and there's actual evidence (i.e. not just the spouse's word) to prove that. It's a Junior-Senior High School which apparently includes sixth grade. The article says she was a former student and to me that implies that he was her teacher but even if he wasn't it's the same school - not some elementary school on the other side of town. And it's not a big school (it's a rural district in Nebraska). So they almost certainly met at the school. Also, it's a 90 day requirement. It's not that hard to comply with. Don't date any recent grads until September.

You would think it would violate the 13th amendment. I mean draftees do get paid but obviously it's below market or the military wouldn't have to draft people. The reason there hasn't been a draft is because they haven't needed one. Also, until a constitutional amendment banning the draft is passed I would argue that the two statements are materially equivalent. Passing a law to activate the draft and passing a law to create a draft (as was done with the Selective Service Act of 1917) require all the same people to vote for it.

I'm not convinced by that but supposing it's true that creates an interesting dilemma. Would anyone agree to be castrated to pick up another five years of life? Of course the other question there is at what age would you have to do it to get the benefit or at least the majority of the benefit? An electrician can usually get work. He's got a skillset that is directly applicable to a job that needs doing. I can't say the same about a psych degree. If you actually want to be a therapist or something then you generally need at least a masters and even then it's not particularly lucrative. And that's if you're able to find a job in your field. There really aren't any. Even if you want to have kids if you can get past the "out of wedlock" stigma then you're better off not marrying her. I mean then the only financial risk is child support (which you still have if you're married) but if you marry her then you're also putting half your assets at risk plus potential alimony. The headline doesn't seem to match the article. Those are people who've been chemically and surgically altered. If you're at that level of passability then you can pretty much use the women's bathroom at will because nobody is going to question you - provided you keep your birth sex a secret and don't also have some super deep voice (which would diminish your passability). For the vast majority of people, unless they have some serious hormone malfunction, once they hit puberty its pretty easy to tell whether they're male or female.
