‘Soulmate’ is horseshit. That’s a fairytale told to little girls which gives them insane expectations as adult women. But a happy, healthy and productive marriage/lifelong relationship? Yes, that is possible. As long as that’s what you want, and you’re willing to accept someone who is good enough to play that role, and they accept you the same. But don’t expect perfection. It doesn’t exist.

I got in to a relationship very quickly after splitting from my wife. It lasted about 12 months, maybe a bit longer for the on/off phase. She wanted full commitment, marriage, babies etc. I was not down for that. After that relationship I played the field a little. Had some fucking wild experiences… It helped a lot with processing the divorce. My ex-wife isn’t my ex any longer. She’s only my last-but-one ex. She genuinely is… just another one of the women.

Pick Up Artists. Guys who model themselves as super competent at picking up women. There’s a whole fucking thing behind it, and it’s mostly bullshit.

I will be forever changed by the experience. In some ways good, in more ways bad. If something was hard to come by (independence, money, a house, children, trust) then don’t give it away/share it lightly.

Sounds like a lot of energy to put in to someone you should be moving on from. Maybe use that time, money and energy on yourself instead of her. In a positive, foreword looking way, rather that focussing on her as a part of your past.

Don’t fall in love with the first woman who offers you a blowjob. Seriously, for the next couple of years there will be a lot of intense, overwhelming and conflicting thoughts and emotions. Consider very carefully which ones you act on. Don’t be afraid to get out there and meet women. Tinder is always an option. But for fucks sake keep control of yourself. In all things, control, discipline, care, strength. You control your destiny now. And fuck knows you’ve suffered for that control, so exercis…

No way. I’ve said it before: I gambled half my life that a woman would always feel the same way she did on one particular day. I lost that bet. It would be insane to make the same bet again. My current girlfriend has said that by this I am ‘punishing her’ for my ex-wife’s behaviour… which is a hell of a thing to unpack.

We’ve been on 2-2-3 for about 2 years now too. Kids are early teens in high school. There’s a little too much forgetting stuff at one house or the other, as most transfers happen via school. I would hate to go a full week without seeing my kids, but the flip side is that it feels I’m always saying goodbye to them, as soon as I get them back. The weekly routine is totally foreign to me. I work from home full time so I don’t have a sense of weekday or weekend, just days with the kids or days witho…

Ok cool, I don’t really have any experience with anything like that, so it seemed counter intuitive to me! I guess it makes sense to those who know what they’re talking about! Thank you.

The questions are extremely leading. It feels like there’s a preconceived idea of what impact a breakup has and it’s only asking “Was it like this for you too?”

Yeah, go for it! There’s a lot of parallels to your other creative pursuits. You need to understand some basic techniques, appreciate the quality of raw materials, then apply your imagination and take inspiration from others. And don’t be afraid to fail! Good luck bro!

Lift weights, ride bikes, cook food, occasionally turn some wood into sawdust. That’s about it really.

There’s just no need for marriage. You’re adding a legal framework to an emotional state, ie whether or not you and this person want to remain together. I bet half my life that another independent person would always feel the same way they did at one moment, and I lost that bet. But with hindsight, it was insanity. I mean, what would I have actually gained from winning that bet?

She wants to be friends so she doesn’t have to confront the truth about herself; that she has let you down and failed to meet expectations in the most horrendous way. “I can’t have been so bad to him, we’re still friends after all”

Yeah 2 teenagers. I get it makes things simple and consistent for them.

I told my current girl that I can’t imagine I will ever want to marry again. She said that I was “punishing her” for the way my ex-wife behaved! Now, where do I even start with that?!

Man, I could relate a couple of stories every week just like this with my ex. The short version is: forget it. Don’t let her get to you. You keep doing your best, and let her go to pieces about it.

I really, really needed to read this tonight. Thank you brother.

That’s brutal, for kids that age to be so aware of how badly you were treated. Hopefully things are a lot better for you and your girls now.

I second pretty much word for word what this dude said. Yeah, my STBXW is a good person, and a good mother. And she’ll make someone a good partner, if she learns to defrost a bit, as well as deal with a few other fairly major personality issues...! OP: be kind to yourself. Don’t be ashamed of doing what you need to do.

Try r/daddit. Often it’s kind of light hearted and silly, but there’s a good group there who will support no matter what.

Only you can know your own heart. But remember, a part of the relief of divorce (I assume) was taking control of your own destiny and the freedom to live your life as you see fit. If you see value in this woman, will you let the hangover of your ex-wife determine your actions? Or are you truly free of her? Be cautious, but don’t be scared. I wish you all the best brother.

Dude, do you want to be paying for that house when she’s bringing her boyfriends back to fuck them in your bedroom? Sorry, I know that’s overly emotive language, but like I said before we’re in a similar spot and I have considered taking the tiny apartment and funding the house so she/the kids are stable and secure. But the day will come when she and I will both move on, and at that point I’m paying for some other guy to live in my home with my kids and sleep with the woman I still love. I’m no …

It is so scary how close my story and yours is. I’m in exactly the same position right down to age of the kids and relative income of me and STBXW. My thoughts are that although it would be best if the kids stayed in the nice plush home we have now it would degrade quality of life for either me or her that animosity and friction would soon grow. Better to tear the band aid off and get the house sold. Then I can reinvest my money and provide a fairly similar quality of life for me and the kids, a…

It was the simple thought that I didn’t want life to always look the way it currently was, but there was clearly no hope of things getting better with her. I could have continued on a day-by-day basis, but the idea of weeks, months, years stretching ahead of me with no prospect of improvement was too much to accept.
