A study was done in a 1970s hospital that divided a nursery room in half. One side had brochures with detailed lists of pros and cons of circumcision for parents to sign. The other side simply asked if they wanted it. They found the percentage who chose circumcision was identical for the two and concluded circumcision is cultural. Parents use "health" to justify it in polite company because a mother publicly saying she carved her sexual preference into her son's penis is a terrible look.

The issue is that some circumcised men do have a problem with their body being surgically altered without their consent. The international community has already banned any alteration of girls’ genitals (including minor stuff like labiaplasty or piercings) even though women are just as likely to be “fine” with it. The only reason it’s not gender equal is that it’s an American custom and a Jewish ritual. Those are two tribes that most politicians are loath to piss off.

One of my contacts discussed the topic with a man who thought he was circumcised. He wasn't. He had a birth defect, aposthia, which means he was born without a foreskin. He tried to justify infant circumcision when he assumed it had been forced on him but as soon as he learned he was born that way, he became open to opposing the surgery on children. My guess is it was originally a test of courage for warlike cultures because the ability to endure excruciating pain was needed in soldiers. In the Bible, Joshua's army is circumcised before they conquer Canaan. Most cutting cultures do it as a rite of passage and backing out means you're a coward, not a man. Most cultures see sex as dirty, so reducing pleasure by cutting off sensitive flesh is "cleaner".
