It's a pretty well known fact that the more you access certain "neuron formations" (thoughts) the more readily accessible they are. The more you use them the more the connections between them strengthen (and the other way around), so no matter how "independent" or how much of a "free thinker" you think you are, you will be influenced by the things you read, your entourage etc.

Awesome post. Reminds me of this video I saw a while back. Also meditation goes a long way into tearing down the manufactured needs we've indoctrinated with as we've grown up. Not to say you can't enjoy expensive (to the point of being practical, over a certain point you just pay for prestige) things in some areas that you really enjoy but balance is key and a lot of the time LESS IS MORE.

Most of these things aren't bad in themselves but their addictive nature is. Just like wine isn't bad but for an alcoholic it is, same goes for gaming for a large majority of us (or weed, etc.). It's easier to just cut it out altogether and replace it with something that hasn't been embedded in us to create an addictive response.
