Agreed. But there’s already talk about starting a 4b movement here from the lib feminists which will make matters worse. So prepare for that

This is why I have a hard time believing feminists actually want men to have their own spaces to “heal”, “deconstruct gender norms”, or whatever: because a genuine movement like that would be for the betterment of men for society as a whole and NOT a for women and feminists specifically. Feminists have correctly and successfully argued that women aren’t objects for male use and pleasure, but they have yet to turn that critical eye on themselves towards men. That’s why groups like this get attack…

I think that has been true in my case. Therapist simply listened and regurgitated what I told them which I didn’t find particularly helpful. That’s why I found talking to a psychiatrist more helpful because I had to talk about myself in more concrete terms which felt more constructive and aimed towards a wellness plan. I can’t speak for everyone of course

People with wrong motivations can be right sometimes. We can separate the research from the individual

In the area I grew up there weren’t many male therapists to choose from. When I moved to a bigger city there were a lot more. Perhaps more men should be encouraged to become therapists

Yeah, in hindsight I probably shouldn’t have been so reluctant to try marriage counseling. But, like you described, I heard so many bad things about therapists (“my therapist said this about my ex…” or “marriage counselor said my husband should be doing this…”, etc). I mean, I never heard any of my therapists say anything about MY exes? I don’t know if the women telling me this were lying or misconstrued what their therapist was saying or what, but I had the perception that as a man I would be u…

You bring up a great point about parental abuse and neglect and how that hinders social growth, AND then how modern life essentially turns us into prisoners of our own home therefore compounding the issue. So it’s no wonder why there’s a seeming pandemic of lonely men, especially given their societal expectations. So how can they “do better” if they don’t have the foundations for success AND then get personally blamed for not having them? I never looked at it this way. I love how you framed it.

A part that I like in that video is the need for men to fix problems rather than to merely describe them. While I’m not particularly interested in putting psychological differences between men and women in a box, I did feel that described my tendencies. When I was going to therapy for depression, I honestly felt that it was making me worse because I had to keep talking about how I felt when I didn’t want to feel that way at all. After getting a psychiatrist, all that changed. Talking to my psych…

As a side note, this might explain why a lot of men have grown skeptical of psychology and it’s pop terminology. Men can deploy this bullying tactic too but I mostly see it with feminist-types online. They’ll throw out terms like “toxic”, “narcissistic”, “antisocial”, “gaslighting”, etc at their victims as a way to deflect their own guilt. They claim their victims are “projecting” when the irony is that it’s them doing the projecting. So men have shied away from therapy and ignore psychology bec…

I had to think about this one for awhile. I could see how “positive masculinity” could be used as a way to shape men into something that women want (I guess as a form of “objectification”) by some of the lazier (and probably most common) forms of feminism. You gave me something to think about

I’m unfamiliar with this fact sheet so when was it published? If recently it’s in serious need of updating. But assuming its accuracy, I’m highly critical of the criminal justice system so most of these women don’t deserve to be in prison. But my concern is that when people read this they’ll jump to the conclusion that we need to maintain the status quo or worse advocate for a more robust prison system for male offenders. It’s things like these, if misused, can feed into our desire to discipline…

The prison system needs a serious overhaul so I’ll always appreciate a nuanced analysis of crime and incarceration. So if we’re going to take this analysis of 4% of the prison population based on sex wouldn’t it be helpful to do the same for the other WHOPPING 96%!!? Like, what percentage of them are homeless and have substance abuse issues or, heaven forbid, come from abuse situations themselves?!!! Understanding that might be more helpful in crime prevention, which would be better for society …

Yes. As another commenter pointed out, notions of femininity and masculinity are largely meaningless outside of feminist spaces. But within those spaces, “masculinity” is a construct to shape and harness male behavior
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates06/10/24 07:35 AM

Yup. It’s gaslighting at a large scale. The feminist response is that it’s actually MEN who condition and encourage male victims to remain silent. Things like that might go on in more right wing circles but I’ve never actually seen normal and rational men discourage or gaslight other men from discussing their assault from female assailants. A joke might get made but that’s usually understood to be because the guy is being confronted with the possibility that a man CAN be raped by a woman. Those …

I feel like this is an issue that feminists aren’t ready for. I and many other men have faced this problem, leading me to believe that women are far more guilty of sexual assault and violence than what society cares to admit. It’s just that men haven’t thought of themselves as victims in this respect.

And it’s also not true… https://www.americansurveycenter.org/newsletter/are-young-men-becoming-conservative/ Though the study focuses on young men, the evidence shows there has been very little movement towards conservatism over time. It’s possible that people tend to vote more conservative as they age: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0261379422000452 But this is likely true for both men and women. What’s more likely the case is that young women have largely shifted leftward w…

I tend to think that these kinds of studies have to make a cynical appeal to feminist framing because it’s feminist that tend to dominate these discussions. With equal if not higher exposure to child labor, violence, and bullying amongst boys, the study has to say it’s not a “zero sum game” and other “rationale” to explain to feminists why they should care about education opportunities for boys.

Yes I agree. IMO, feminism attempts to spin notions of femininity as some sort of inherent virtue while masculinity is something that needs to be harnessed and shaped. Meanwhile outside of feminism, femininity and masculinity are largely meaningless terms.

“The core of leftist values has always been about supporting the poor and defenseless, recognizing that social conditions shape identity—not the other way around.” Bingo

If it’s terms like “strength”, “bravery”, and “stoicism” that askfeminists are opposed to being exclusively attributed to masculinity, then I agree with them. Women can be those things too. My problem with the whole toxic/positive masculinity discussion is the assumption that men are void of empathy and vulnerability and that we’re all walking time bombs ready to go off at any moment. This is true of some men as it is for some women (perhaps a lot more women than feminists are comfortable with a…

While I think a lot of people here aren’t opposed to subverting or deconstructing gender norms and acknowledge the prevalence of sexism in both it’s misogynistic and misandric forms, from my perspective most would cut out the proposed middle man of feminism and label ourselves egalitarians, gender or otherwise. But because left-liberals have largely neglected male-centered issues, this sub is forced to exist. Also, because this is a leftist sub, I think it would be more helpful to frame issues w…

Yeah this was brought up in the “do men like to be objectified?” post. Some commenters thought that objectification for men wasn’t sexual but they were merely an object of cannon fodder. It’s this objectification that would be assumed by imperialism regardless of whomever holds the reins

Yeah I was quite disgusted with how this interview opened. Like “conflicting feelings” about having a boy? Friends being disappointed in the sex of the baby? Sounds like she needs new friends. She kinda openly admitted that her feminists colleagues are in fact misandrists.

Bless you for watching the whole video. I couldn’t make it past the two minute mark 🤢 In my mind, feminists want gender deconstruction for women and gender reconstruction for men under the guise of “positive masculinity” that keep the attributes they specifically like while excising the ones they don’t. Conservatives meanwhile want the reaffirmation of traditional gender roles. Either way, men are expected to behave in rigid and confined ways which is why I can’t find solace in either side.

Some may judge you for this but I sympathize. I feel like I’m in a similar position. I wasn’t the most attractive person growing up, received very little attention from the opposite sex, and began to go bald very early in life. After a lot of effort and a LOT of money, I’d say I’ve become at least passingly attractive but the scars still linger. Like you, I’ve been complemented for various abilities but none of them stick like being complemented for my looks (on the rare occasion I receive them)…

Yes excellent point. Unwanted would presumably entail non-enjoyment. And as other commenters have said here who have experienced this, but being sexually objectified as a man by a woman is every bit as demeaning as the other way around. I get that it’s not as common for men, but again as other commenters have pointed out here, the ways how men are objectified is by how they can materially provide for women (as one said, women view men as “ATMs”). But just scrolling through that thread and readin…

Yeah I think that’s part of the unique way that men are objectified. Not that women aren’t objectified in this way (such as younger guys scamming older women) or that men can’t be sexually objectified as women are (which is probably far more common than what feminists are willing to admit. In fact, I’d argue A LOT of women are guilty of doing things that if the shoe were put on the other foot would be seen as sexual assault or domestic violence) but this is a common experience with men and it’s …

Yeah, I think that’s the larger problem to discuss here. Objectification applies equally to men as it does to women albeit in different ways. Women, as it is commonly perceived, are more sexually objectified. But what is much less talked about is men being reduced to what they can do and provide, a different form of objectification.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates04/10/24 01:46 AM

Totally. You have to stop and consider what is meant by “objectification”. Being reduced to an object of desire and not as person is degrading (unless you’re into that sort of thing). Women aren’t being trivial when they throw that word out there and if you’re a guy who’s been groped working at a bar, been SA’d, etc, etc, you know exactly what that means. I think what is interesting about that thread is that some have framed objectification in terms of class struggle, like men being reduced to o…

I don’t think that objectification is ever a desired thing, at least for most people. But I think it’s an interesting discussion on that post in the way how some people frame objectification for men in terms of disposability in war and in working class terms

Although I can’t give a thorough history of male advocacy as a whole, in my view male advocacy is still largely in its infancy stage in the public’s eye. But, I’d argue, it’s a natural outgrowth of feminism. With feminism largely shaping the gender discussion and the discussions around rape and sexual assault, it’s only a matter of time before women realize that they are perpetrators of it too. If we look at how rape and SA are defined, I’m a victim of it from female perpetrators. I know other m…

Absolutely! Well put! And it’s this strand of feminism, or the “girl boss” phenomenon, that has sadly been conflated with leftist objectives. From my perspective, both liberal feminists and MRAs agree that the “future is female” when they see women outperforming men academically, social and private programs dedicated to their success, and men (or the idea thereof) being bashed unquestionably in social media and the MSM for their alleged privilege. Then men are looking at their lives and not seei…

Sure, I mean a lot of this is anecdotal. I’m just speaking from what I’ve seen from subreddits like askfeminists and from Heathen Queen (or Queen of Heathens) who was/is a somewhat popular figure within atheist circles. She would notoriously say things like (paraphrasing) “of course not ALL men. If you thought I meant that then clearly you’re guilty of something” probably when she realized how she came across when she would nebulously discuss “problems with men”. But I’ll admit she’s an extreme …

I agree and I think your last paragraph hit the nail on the head. When you sound like a right-winger, rationalize like a right-winger, and act like a right-winger, you are a right-winger. I won’t undermine the good intentions of some feminists. Most feminists I’ve come across aren’t the die hard anti-man kind and simply use the term to mean “bolster women’s rights, particularly reproductive rights, so that we have an equitable future for both women AND men” then leave it at that. And I agree wit…

I wish feminists and right wingers would make out already. Tbh I don’t want to strawman ALL feminists but some of the more popular and poorly thought out strands seem to mirror far right tendencies by proposing female exceptionalism and gross simplification and demonization of men almost to the point where I’m failing to distinguish between the two

Yup, they fail to understand “smashing the patriarchy” within the wider context of class consciousness. From a leftist perspective this has allowed feminism to become an instrument of capitalism where certain strands of feminists don’t demand equal opportunity but equal opportunity to exploit. So they chant “the world would be a better place if women ruled” without understanding that under capitalism it doesn’t matter who rules. So the US is about to elect its first female president. Cool! Now t…

Oh sure. A 5/10 woman will definitely have more opinions than a 5/10 man or even 8-9/10 man when it comes to online dating, which is now the predominant entry point for dating. Men are at a very clear disadvantage in that respect. I think odds are a little bit more even IRL. In fact, I’d say that the attractiveness 1-10 scale kinda breaks down when people meet IRL and resorts to a “binary” scale (you either find them attractive or you don’t) so both men and women can date “out of their league” s…

Possibly but when I’ve come across this it’s simply run-of-the-mill denial which can be found in 4/5+ men as well. People greatly overestimate their value, at least if we’re discussing the dating market

Cakism…love it 👍 And to your point about the pendulum swinging, even among the stereotypical “blue haired” types, is because of this cakism. It may just be an anecdotal observation I see among feminists and progressive-minded women I know and follow, but the feminist title they proclaim is either being heavily downplayed or amended or they have moved on to more pressing issues. Probably because they realize its limitations as a movement and/or its propensity to be misunderstood and used by bad a…

Pretty privilege exists. The more good looking you are the more discerning you can be with your company. Which is why it’s no surprise that good looking women, particularly good looking white women, who are also feminists are facing this level of cognitive dissonance. They’ve been catered to their entire lives by men which in some ways means they’ve benefited from the patriarchy and wish to continue being beneficiaries of it while simultaneously understanding the need for gender deconstruction a…
