Where I live in the US, you'd be lucky to rent a room for under $1,000. The only way you get down to $600 is if you were willing to share a bedroom with someone. Minimum wage is $10 in my city, so a lot of young people still live at home. A lot of older people live in multi-family situations in what we still call "single-family" homes. Again, I'm not arguing for less qualified women to get in, and therefore, there wouldn't be more injuries. Training and building strength can lessen injuries, but part of it still comes down to how much your body can take. It may just be my own experience talking. Maybe I'm wrong. Well, a person who doesn't have custody of children can't qualify for nearly as much assistance which might keep him off the streets. Our social safety net programs are aimed at protecting children. Since women are far more likely to have primary custody, they are the main recipients of that assistance. I'll admit my opinion on this is pretty controversial, but I think appropriate sentencing should be primarily about public safety. I do believe that deterrent value is part of that, too. So there needs to be some teeth in sentencing, but beyond that I think it should be about keeping people who are a danger away and doing our best to rehabilitate people (which our current prison system fails at miserably). In general, we don't have enough emergency housing for homeless people but we make it illegal to sleep in a vehicle, in a park, or pretty much any public space outdoors. Though FMLA applies to both parents in the US. It's just unpaid leave but stipulates that the employer must hold your job for you. Fortunately every company I've worked for that offered paid parental leave offered it to both parents. I guess that's not common. That, I do believe, should be mandated by law. Maybe the father didn't see any signs of abuse or maybe this was a recent development after they split. Apparently they broke up just two months before the poor child was killed. Whatever it was, the court found it inappropriate enough that they're mandating an adult be there to supervise at night. We also know that the guy is sexually attracted to children. I just don't see why he shouldn't be supervised during the day as well. Even if you assume he's totally safe, the children are already afraid of him.
