I did not equate wasting hundreds of hours a month chasing some manor of achievement in a game with meditation, and the Buddha. I just said Buddha teached us to enjoy our life in moderation. Gaming is a way to relax and enjoy your free time. It's not "a massive pit". It's not mind numbing like watching the news or soap operas. I'm totally on the same boat. My mom was 19 and dad 21 when they got me. He never had the opportunity to enjoy his life for himself. They divorced when Í was around 7, and he got remaried few years later with a woman 10 years younger than him. I think he is quite happy at the moment but his potential is wasted on being a dad.
