Right on. Whenever anyone asks me about my political orientations it basically boils down to: I'm left not liberal. Sadly, flinty miners-style socialism of the sort I'm interested in just doesn't seem to have a place in modern politics. Everything is about language/thought crimes and vague gestures towards 'representation'. The idea of, I don't know, a properly funded state which actually provides services, a world-beating NHS, social services, safety nets, policies to empower ordinary people ag…

Exactly. Past a certain point - say if you look like Chris Hemsworth or Henry Cavill - it is almost impossible to be creepy. Stalking? You're just showing her how much you like her. Creepy overblown romantic gestures or unsolicited flirting? Her giny tingles give you the all clear. I know this myself first hand. Back before I got disfigured/terminally ill, I was a 7/10 maybe 8/10 myself and inadvertently quite weird around women - I just didn't grasp that the kind of grand gesture stuff on shows…

100%. I've experienced this in real life, going from being a chad-lite to them developing a disfigurement and disease which disabled me. I'm the same person, possibly a little more bitter and jaded now, but able to mask with charm when I want, but women now won't touch me with a pole. I've seen a close friend go the other way. He recovered from depression in college and lost a tonne of weight going from an obese guy with poor hygiene to an athletic build who dresses well. He now does excellently…

I'd say it's 50 pc looks and/or other forms of physical deformity and disability and 50 pc poor social skills and/or not being neurotypical. The precise breakdown varies per person.

On watching the ad, I think it's meant to be a bit of a BDSM play. The black domme outfit for Blake and the 'good boy' bit is a bit of a giveaway. Still poorly managed though.

The solution is obvious: you need male solidarity, a male equivalent of feminism (though ideally less toxic) which all men are behind. The trouble is too many men put hoes before bros. They view bashing and subjugating their fellow men as a way to get ahead with women and view other men as competition rather than allies. I've experienced this first hand: other men piling on bald shaming me or face shaming me to try and impress the bitchy girls in the club. Men just don't seem able to advocate fo…

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Zootopia is one of the most pro-men films to come out of Hollywood in recent years. A very clever allegory of modern gender relationships.

Some can, some can't. It would be nice for people to at least try though. My two cents is that medical science is the main answer: most incels and school-shooter types I've met are the victims of shit biology - they're ugly or thick or actually mentally and physically ill. Fix that, give them a proper start in life, and the rampages go away. With the obligatory caveat that he was a POS who did awful things, do you think Elliot Rodger would have mowed down that sorority house if he was neurotypic…

Indeed. It's a thankless task being a male (who isn't part of the CEO Chad 1%) in this society. Your job is to turn up, shut up and grind out and give all your earnings to manipulative women. CF Philip Larkin: "He married a woman to stop her getting away Now she's there all day, / And the money he gets for wasting his life on work She takes as her perk To pay for the kiddies' clobber and drier And the electric fire"

Yes, I too find Only Fans and the 'women' who run accounts on their abhorrent. I've used it a grand total of one times, when at peak loneliness I subscribed to an account that was meant to unlock some video content I'd actually previously been able to get for free but had then gone behind a paywall. The lady implied that a basic £20 a month sub would restore access but in fact it did nothing of the sort, only getting me a couple of automated messages, and this was an account that had been featur…

I think this is it in a nutshell. I did a female-heavy course at uni and have several female relatives my own age (late 20s). All are ceaselessly banging the drum about their own claimed oppression, talking about how there need to be more female-only-grants, quotas and so on like you said, and more than happy to take advantage of these to leap frog their male peers, but their liberalism and leftism stops there. They don't give any time or resources to support other marginalised groups such as th…

I wonder whether this has anything to do with the difficulty countries like Britain have with staffing the military, particularly in dangerous front-line jobs... Maybe men who keep being told how awful they are aren't going to queue up to die protecting their critics?

Exactly. I'm a white man with an acquired disfigurement and progressive disability (in fact a terminal condition). I have never heard a feminist raise any concerns about people like me or give any time or money to helping people other than an already very narrow and relatively privileged coterie of middle class white women. If you believe in notions of equity, then this has to span out to encompass all vulnerable individuals and groups and arguably those with serious illnesses, since they're fac…

Lol. And of course the irony is that even blokes who cede ground and play into the whole white knight thing don't actually gain the love and respect of women. All the white knights I knew at uni were low-key despised by their female friends who preferred to give the best of themselves to 'toxic' dude bros and only kept the knights around as glorified lackeys.

And it also goes for the admittedly much more minor problem of dating. Young liberal women calling out 'toxic masculinity' and sexism and racism and ableism while showing a hard preference for traditionally masculine white men. Women choose with their feet (and with other parts) and they don't generally spread their benevolence on the people they claim to support.

My experience is that most self-described leftists or liberals are only as liberal as they're either pushing policies that benefit them directly e.g. quotas for women in businesses or as Maggie Thatcher (not someone I'm usually a fan of) would have it 'spending other people's money'. I'm not surprised this is particularly true of young women as it gels with my experience. I think the average young woman is economically right wing but socially left wing, and the average young man is economically …

To an extent I'm making a virtue of necessity (since I'm disabled, disfigured and, to cap it off, bloody terminally ill, so have no realistic chance with women anyway), but these days I just avoid women. I am polite and cordial, but I give them no special treatment and do expect interactions with them to bring any positives to my life, in fact quite the opposite. This has been born out by years of hard experience: discrimination, mocking, bullying and just generally savage encounters. I have lea…

Wasn't this around the time numerous Guardian-type papers were fielding columns by women calling for a male-only curfew of 8pm? I remember reading that and thinking it was a prank to start with, but then I overheard a female family member talking about it quite seriously. I was beyond words. The death of SE was obviously a tragedy, but it triggered an outburst about a problem that was wildly out of proportion. Statistically, one, these kind of random attacks on women are vanishingly rare - sadly…

Yes, I've gone through this stage, but thankfully (in a perverse way) a serious illness that basically took me out of the dating game and some (soberingly) bad experiences with women got me out the other side. I am polite and considerate to an extent that I deem reasonable, but I refuse to make wear a gag because someone thinks I've got sharp teeth. I think the Zootopia reference is really apt: there's many valid readings of that film, but one of them is very much an allegory about the current w…

The world certainly needs more people to step up but it doesn't require 'big sacrifices'. If the whole of the UK population gave just £10 a year - which they would not notice - to research for say an underfunded medical disorder (ALS/MND, frontal temporal dementia or whatever) that would be almost £1 billion a year. Continued over 20 or 30 years that would basically guarantee cures for those conditions, saving many lives. It would be transformative and from each individual would require less tha…

I'm no philosopher but for what it's worth my instincts are that procreating is at best a morally neutral activity and probably unethical. What I keep circling back to is (a) how much misery and suffering there is even in the best lives (we must all age and die, we must all suffer great loss, severe frustrations etc.) and the worst lives, well, it doesn't bear thinking about, and (b) the fact that no child can consent to be born. Nothing is lost to the unborn individual by not bringing them into…

I probably agree with this. I am not diagnosed but have long suspected that I may be on the spectrum in a mild way. I have many traits of autism but have friends who are also high functioning but clearly more fucked than me and actually diagnosed. I imagine I sit right on the threshold of it being clinically meaningful but it's hard to say and I don't want to risk wrongly pathologising myself - and doing a disservice who really do have the condition and struggle. To simplify: my experience of spending time on 'incel' spaces in the past (while to be clear abhorring misogyny and violence) is that most self-professed incels are just down-and-outs, not necessarily economically but socially and romantically. Anyone with blood in their veins knows how important it is to wellbeing to be liked, certainly respected and admired (Andy Warhol was surely on to something when he said that everyone wakes up a little depressed that they aren't famous) and to get positiv…

Good point re incels and red pill. I have quite a few old schools friends who I've long since fallen out of touch with: point is: they're all very successful in dating and life but they see the world through the red pill lens of chads and betas and have quite explicitly spoken to me using those terms. The red pill, in general, is much more popular than people realise. A lot of young men now have their eyes open about some of the common traps that men can fall into and explicitly reject the 'beta…

That's interesting. I'm in the same boat re treatment resistant depression (sorry to hear about yours - and all best for what it's worth) and probably have a form of mild autism - I really struggled making friends at school and beyond and have just never seemed to get social cues or be able to naturally behave in socially acceptable ways (although I know people with autism diagnoses who are much worse). But to my understanding, 'incel' refers to 'involuntary celibate' no? And is linked with men,…

I think 'incel' is a term that has become a bit like 'equality' - it means all things to all men. Academics (shamefully), mainstream media and the average norm hear the word and imagine that everyone who posts on incel-linked forums or refers to themselves as such is a rabid misogynistic woman-hater who is secretly plotting a terrorist attack. I meet the definition for involuntary celibacy, having not had sex nor so much as a hug from a woman for almost 10 years because of an acquired disfigurem…

I'm not an academic but went to a famous university, have academic friends and have published papers (in English Literature) myself, so I have good exposure to it. Academia is a crock of hot shit and academics are not geniuses, just people with average or slightly above average IQs, on the whole, who worked hard and got some breaks. Indeed. I'm a young man with a disabling and likely terminal neurological condition. I've never known a vocal feminist to show any care for people like me, to raise attention for those suffering from such awful conditions nor donate funds to drive research, treatments and cures. It's rather difficult to stomach isn't it? And yet still the myth of the patriarchy, a clandestine group of powerful men actively conspiring to keep women down, persists. The reality is that in the vast majority of aspects women now have full equality and indeed in many areas special treatment. The fight is (with a few exceptions) won. So, you'd think that logically the feminists would be able to pat each other on the back and get a little perspective: disability rights are still shite and need …

I would avoid making this specific to sex/gender - there are many many awful and manipulative men out there too. Still, I think your point about sanity and welfare is correct. These days, I am unable to date or really even socialise due to severe physical illness, but even if I could I would avoid it: you can't trust people, certainly not for something as important as romantic relationships. The last relationship I was in took a massive toll on my mental health and I would never risk that again.

Regardless of the sex/gender involved, these kinds of cases are just so sad. I can't say I've ever experienced anything on that scale, but back when I was in my very earliest 20s, I dated a manipulative and unsupportive partner. When it was great they were great - they were very attractive and charming and could make you feel like you were flying with happiness - but when it was bad... During the final months of the relationship, my mental health, which had always been poor, deteriorated. All th…

I'm not sure about it being 'female nature' (there are a lot of shitty guys out there too!), but it's certainly human nature. Like the below poster, I've found I've just become numb to this kind of stuff now. I've seen and experienced too much bullshit that I've checked out. Can confirm. I saw a prostitute a while ago and it was honestly one of the worst experiences of my life. She was completely disengaged (to the point of watching the fucking Today Show on TV while I pogo-ed on top of her), and just generally treated the exchange as the sordid transaction it was. On the other hand, it was a much needed wake-up call. It reminded me to stop putting sex on a pedestal: because sex with someone who isn't in to you, and with who you have no mutual attraction or connecti…

I dunno. Replace the word 'sex' in 'sex bots' with 'intimacy' and you get something that I would find more appealing. A pretty face that can talk, tell jokes, understands and likes me. Regardless, I think it's a given that robot girlfriends are the future and solution for male celibacy and loneliness. A poem from the 16th c you might like - apparently the wall was a thing in Tudor England too. My Lute Awake BY SIR THOMAS WYATT My lute awake! perform the last Labour that thou and I shall waste, And end that I have now begun; For when this song is sung and past, My lute be still, for I have done. I'll be honest: I don't so much mind the high standards. What I do take issue with, however, is their accessibility. When I was younger, I worked hard on my health, fitness and - after a few false starts - at school to be as close to the 'complete package' as I could be, and for a few years around age 18 I came pretty close to it. Then I got sick, very sick, due to unexplained drug side effects which snowballed into (mild but pervasive) disfigurement (baldness and body wide premature aging and b…

I vote for my country's most likely to get into power left wing party (Labour, UK), but I consider myself politically homeless. The current crop of Labour politicians and most of the vocal party supporters are only slightly better than the Tories on economic issues and culturally just as bad (but on the other side of the spectrum - if the Tories are haunted by the ugly ghosts of classism, and misogyny, then Labour are battling with the spectres of misandry and all sorts of stupidly reductionist …

I admire vegans and veganism. Unfortunately, I'm really very ill - and cutting meat and animal products out of my diet would exacerbate this and requires a level of organisation that I am physically not capable of. Were this not the case, however, I would switch in a heartbeat. There's no argument that eating meat is morally wrong, and I find it ironic that so many people complain about being the victims of all sorts of injustices and violence, yet give no thought to promoting even worse violenc…

I think, in fairness, that what you're describing is pretty typical of many men. Cross-dressing is a very common kink, and many women are receptive to it; and I think, within reason, being more emotional is viewed as a positive too. All this, however, comes with the big caveat: they have to be attracted to you first. I think within relationships, some aspects of feminism are quite freeing for men, but only the 'right' type of man gets the benefits. Harry Styles can flout about in a dress and get…

We men do not rally around and support our peers they way women do This is a big, big part of it I feel. People talk about women bitching and sniping at each other, but from my observation and experience, this is nothing compared to how most men behave. Everything is a competition; men seem to view each other first and foremost as potential rivals and are constantly embarking on strange contests and puffing out their chests at every opportunity. Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad to hear you're still in the game and playing a winning hand. Your experience certainly checks out with my own. The second you get into your 20s, age - as a number - stops being important for dating. It really seems to boil down to looking attractive and then not looking so old that it would be weird for them to be seen with you, which if you're hot won't be the case. (1) this would make a great sf book/film; (2) this is very possible. I remember I had a bit of 'player' friend at uni who explicitly stopped sleeping around after MeToo because he was terrified of falling victim to a false rape claim or something similar. He was very wealthy (and the women he met would have been able to discern this from the societies he was in, dress sense etc.) and not unreasonably worried that he would be targeted.

I think, sadly, that this kind of cosmic loneliness is just the nature of the human condition. I've never met someone who, upon questioning (especially if drunk with their guard down lol) doesn't admit to having felt like this at some point, and usually quite often. I agree that many incels do have something they can play with. As someone who is biologically prohibited from doing this, it does frustrate me how many incel-types complain about, say, being skinny and this and that but refuse to do the few things they can control to improve their situations: like going to the gym, fixing a nice hairstyle, good skincare routines, minor plastic surgeries (if it comes to that). However, I think you vastly overestimate how random dating is and how women perceive th…

Not read it but a friend told me that Louise Perry's new book has a good piece on this, pointing out that much feminist rhetoric seems to essentially take the most powerful and successful men (economically, socially and sexually - she uses the example of Hugh Heffner) and generalise from this, overlooking the vast majority of men who may well have some privileges but are doing awfully on so many other metrics. The point about men not supporting each other resonates with me. That second par is so important. I know tonnes of men who trade in 'incel' memes and let out their frustrations by making dodgy jokes and pseudo-misogynistic remarks online, but they are not really misogynists. It's a safety release valve, carried out in a safe space, away from women where their are few real-life victims. Yes, bitterness is very common and no movement is better at energising it than the far-right, in my experience. That said, I'm kind of reaching the point where I question the utility of 'right' and 'left' as political monikers. It's actually surprisingly difficult to find people and communities, on Reddit or otherwise, who are skeptical of feminism as a movement, and support men's rights issues, while simultaneously not being 'incels' (here I don't so much mean men who struggle to get laid - I'm one of those - but men who spout misogynistic views and advocate violence towards women) and high-core right-wingers. I think that's a healthy decision. The reality is that most of these so-called feminists don't want a dialogue, they simply want to wail about some trivial problem in their lives and game their way into greater status. It's not really about equality at all.

Quite right too. Jones does not have an unfettered health condition, he's made his body into that mess, destroyed his health and consequently placed an additional burden on society e.g. healthcare systems through his own free will. The article has every right to make that broader value judgement. It's one - as a former athlete who lost his muscle due to neuromuscular illness - I share. I cringe when I see people like him who abuse their bodies.

From what you've quoted, I'm not sure that really counts as body-shaming. To me, it's just good descriptive journalism. Just those three words 'large, red man' conjured up a near instant image of Jones in my head, squeezing and sweating into the camera. Shaming's got nothing to do with it.

It's a moot point really. As long as you're good-looking, confident and have good social skills, you will have success with women, pretty much however you go about things. If you don't meet those criteria then you won't. There's no secret button.

This is true to a point, but the qualifier (unless you're smooth, confident and good-looking) is important. I'm disfigured and disabled now, but when I was healthy I had quite a lot of success by just going up to random girls and saying some variant of 'Hey, I'm really sorry to bother you and I know this is super weird but I think you are really beautiful and I'd love to give you my phone number'. As long as you meet the above three criteria and don't act like a creep this does work (I had maybe…

Yes. I agree with all of this. I was devastated when I heard about Roe vs Wade being repealed, and I don't know a single decent guy - who identifies as a 'feminist' or not - who wasn't struck and appalled by it. It represents a huge set back not only for women's but also human rights. (I should add I'm also an anti-natalist!) As I say in my post, I'm not someone who is against any of the principles of feminism and find a good many of their societal critiques (e.g. their attacks on marriage, the …

I'm sure this is right. I think, to be honest, that were I still healthy and well it wouldn't bother me so much. I'd just sail on and do my thing and be successful in spite of them and ignore them. What gets me is that by nearly every metric, my life (which probably won't exist for much longer!) is orders of magnitude worse than theirs. I don't think a single one of them would change places with me, and yet I'm viewed as some kind of all-powerful enemy, and lectured on how I should make more of …

That makes sense. I try and start from the assumption that most people are the same mixture of animal and angel. We're essentially civilised apes, driven above all by self-interest, a desire to be successful, eminent, competition. That's the same for white men, white women, black men, black women. Most people I've known who push 'woke' agendas irl have been very privileged individuals by most metrics seeking more privilege. If you're female, struggling to get into, say, journalism, and know that…

Thanks for the kind words. Those are some grim statistics. Sadly, it holds true for the disease I likely have as well. ALS is more common in men than women by a rate of 2:1 and something like 90% of the victims are white. Researchers, probably for political reasons, tend to skirt around this fact and I have yet to read any research looking into how ethic traits may predispose to disease - surely a topic of interest. These days though I'm honestly just winding down, waiting for the official diagn…

Title should of course read 'Trying to have', not 'Having to have'!

I think feminists are right to point out the damaging effects of gender norms, and I also agree with their attacks on traditional, heterosexual marriage and the valorisation of the nuclear family. There is also no doubt that many areas of society e.g. the finance industry, politics, have been historically dominated by men who have shaped cultures hostile to women. Just a few examples off the top of my head.

I'm no fan of Hollywood and not qualified to comment on this in detail, but there's no doubt, just from observing young women that I know, that many use #metoo and similar movements as a way of getting special perks and favours and cementing their already sizeable class privilege, rather than because they have any great concern about sexual assaults and abuse of women. It's rather like how a friend of mine at school deliberately leaned into his ethnic background when applying to universities bec…

I wouldn't like to venture a guess what the numbers are re 'true' vs 'false' accusations of rape, but there's no doubt that the latter exist. I've known all sorts of men and women in my years who would make up stuff (including nasty rumours about other people) for reasons ranging from fun to getting attention. Why should rape be any different? I can absolutely see women making false rape claims, be it for the attention or to get back at a hated ex or for any number of reasons. Now is lying about…
