By 'emotional' misogyny, I mean a dislike of women, but one that you recognise is not rational or ethical - your heart feels severe negative feelings towards them but your head recognises that that's not okay. Having reflected on it, I think - and it is embarrassing to admit this - that I'm in this boat. To be clear, intellectually, I accept that there is little evidence that women are any less moral and upstanding than men. Intellectually, I am obviously pro-women's rights and equality (although there are some factions of modern feminism I think hypocritical). However, I have just had so many negative personal experiences with the opposite sex that it's become a bit like the mythical dog that bites. When your hand's been snapped off too many times, it doesn't matter how many times people tell you dogs are cute and friendly, or indeed how often you observe the same dog being lovely and cuddly with someone else. They've bitten you so instinctively you're wary and react to them negatively.

Does anyone else experience this tension, between their emotional response and their rational response? How do you remain positive in the face of constant rejection and indeed frequently abuse (and I get these from the opposite sex not only in a romantic context but even in what should be friendly exchanges) and not internalise those feelings into a false world view? I have a sister and a mother and want to have productive relationships with them if little else, but I must admit that I find it difficult to avoid my thoughts being polluted by past hurts.
