I am duty bound to administer general health advice regardless of why you attend. Now. Working in the emergency room I don't tell people having strokes to stop smoking. Time and a place. However, anyone with a minor issue gets the usual cut down drinking, lose weight, stop smoking. Some people get specific advice such as this regarding piercing. I have a colleague that has been on maternity for over 2 years now. Keeps having more kids. She is a full time, paid member of the "team" and we have to pull in locum cover, or non EM specialty docs to cover for her being off. I live in the UK. My path was somewhat different to most. I started life as a paramedic before making the jump to med school. Once I left, EM was an easy choice. I like high acuity care, and it has a flavouring of most specialties. Also at that time hardly anyone was doing EM so I had pick of the places to work and train so I could stay in my home city very easily.
