It’s okay that you were in love with this man - forgive yourself for that. You saw the good or potential in him. Gave him chance after chance. And he came through!...sometimes. But those times he came through were a beacon of light. They were proof, right? Sister, forgive yourself. You didn’t know those flashes of light were not sunbeams but lightning strikes. When the clouds have around for so long it’s hard to tell. Forgive yourself.

Can I ask what your thoughts center around? Is it that you miss him/idea of him, or that you wasted so much time with him? Are there unresolved feelings that are capturing your attention?

I’m going to be honest, it’s total hell. Doing a deep dive into your trauma/history, you are emotionally raw and vulnerable. You are in an unprecedented time (covid) and feeling an isolation that you never have before. Then you add this unknown variable (the guy). It has made for a terrible concoction for me - I either project, or seek too much, or avoid. I couldn’t just be myself as the emotional impact of working through my past are extremely taxing. So I would take those into consideration.

I think that applies to more the beginning of dating, which is completely valid. Sometimes as life together with our partner advances, we time and space, especially for big decisions. Imagine if we needed time, and our partner took the advice to ‘walk away’. We would hate that as it invalidates our needs. Acknowledging the needs of our partners also makes us HV, so long as we not compromising our own needs.

I think I was looking at him being someone I could have a fling with since neither of us were interested in a relationship with eachother. We had fooled around a bit, and I thought ‘what the hell’. He was fun, but mostly I wish I could undo some of the perception he must have (though as time passes, I’m sure I won’t care). I wanted touch (as it is my language and due to the pandemic I haven’t had much of it). Hope that clarifies, but I appreciate your respectful way of broochjng :) and I do want…

I’m not uncomfortable being single - but I will always have anxiety, and my attachment style will likely always be a factor. And I do want to have a family some day. So my question more pertains to strategies to navigate, if people have any?

Then before committing to something as big as a mortgage, wait until he figures himself out. We would all like to think it’s going in the direction you want, in the direction that’s been pointed to, but there are no guarantees.

How comfortable do you feel having that dialogue? Because you can offer to pay for any improvements. Or you can comp his rent for the money he put in. Do the assessment on his character and plot your course of action

As a home owner - don’t do it. Don’t even let him Reno it as this will give home claim and entitlement over your assessment. Don’t let him spend a dime!!! Whatever he’s done, pay for it, get it in writing that it was a gift. My friend had to pay out her ex boyfriend because did some super minor renovations, and they were considered common law at the time. If he wants to buy something, let him buy it. At a later date you guys can combine assets.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
