I don't dispute they're both toxic responses, but there's a difference in that one side tends to attack you're being while the other attacks your doing. A rightist might tell you to grow up, but a leftist will call you a child. It's a subtle thing, and both can be cruel of intent and share some implications, but the difference is between "you're not doing good enough" and "you're not good enough". I remember the battered women's shelter that was vandalized and shut down because they refused trans women. The trans movement took away a safe space for abused women because abused women didn't feel safe around trans women. That's my first exposure to the term TERF.

Did you miss the lack of male domestic violence shelters? Until recently there weren't any to speak of in the USA. There have been cases of shelters getting shut down by backlash to their mere existence.

English is rotten with shortcuts that enable confusion like this, deliberate and otherwise. Another is use of "I am" instead of "I do", like "I am a plumber" instead of "I do plumbing work"; or "I am a runner" instead of "I run". English speakers can't even tell the difference between what they are and do anymore.
