My hypothesis is that it has something to do with the bystander effect. People aren’t going to go out of their way to help another person, but when they are given a directive to help someone else, they tend to follow that directive. That said, it does seem that the bystander effect seems to be more prevalent in females, based on my limited anecdotal experiment, although further testing would need to be done on more females to substantiate such a claim.

I did a similar experiment. For me it was 4 out of 50 females that held the door for me. My hypothesis as a result is that Females rarely will hold the door for someone on their own accord, so I took it a step further.
