I don't know if I can agree with the desire to keep all cultures intact. That seems to denote to me some sort assumption that all cultures are equally valid. I also place no innate value in memes. I agree with most of your points but the last one. To me it felt like the young women of the tribe were torn between an appreciation of the ways of their mother (they are still there aren't they?) and desire for the material wealth of a patriarchical society (they talk about how much they want the perks of the outside world).

The feminist journalist makes it clear that she does not care for a real matriarchy and that she clearly feels entitled to men's labor. The men there don't seem particularly oppressed. The women don't particular lean on them for support. Even the brothers, uncles, and sons are not particularly called upon. It strikes me as more of trade off. The men give up their freedom to chase women and some of their leisure in return for guaranteed sex and reproduction.

That is a really excellent point. I had not thought to point out argument to a daughter. Weridly enough I have a hard time refinding it. But I remember it very strongly from my childhood. And I remember where I read it. And I have found it to be VERY true over the course of my life. There are scientific studies that show humans (both sexes) do not acquire all their facial recognition abilites and few other social abilities until they reach there early 20s.
