Yeah that question for the date is a bit cheesy and you're putting yourself down with it by being too nice. Rather ask if she likes to go out at all and ask her for drinks sometime if that is appropriate for her fitness lifestyle.

Actually it will to some extent. I'm a newbie when it comes to working out and I've developed a decent looking chest just by doing 3 sets of 15 pushups 3 days a week. After a while you're gonne have to start adding weight though to get more gains.

Also it can be very awkward for the cashier if you ask her out when she's working because she can't really escape the situation. You could casually slip in a phone number on a piece of paper when you're paying for your order, smile, say 'thanks!' and walk away. That way you're not putting her in an awkward spot at a workplace where there's other people around etc. There are still risks though. If you read her wrong and she doesn't text you, you might have to start going to another coffee shop.
