A good question. I think that the vast majority of couples do not divorce casually, though. If anything, staying in a so-so marriage is easier than going through all the trouble of a divorce. Not that I necessarily think that everyone does everything they should before going for a divorce. There's that stupidity problem again.

The problem isn't the divorce (form). It's the health and happiness of everyone involved (function). The question isn't, "Should they get a divorce?" We should ask questions like... Why isn't this couple happy together? How are they modelling a relationship to their child? What attempts have been made to fix this? Is there anything that has not been tried yet? What are the financial implications of a divorce? What does the child know about the state of their parents' relationship, and how do the…

My problem with traditional family values is that they are imposed from the outside. They are often treated as rules that must be obeyed because that's just how things are supposed to be. Valuing family is great, but "traditional family values" often imply a distaste for less traditional family structure. Form (traditional nuclear marriage) is mistaken for function (health and happiness for all the family members). It doesn't really matter if, in general, kids benefit from having their father ar…

Hm, I bought a book that sorta comes close...Let me see... "What Makes Love Last?" by John Gottman, Ph.D. and Nan Silver. Its interesting stuff. It listed "The Four Horsemen": Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, & Stonewalling. All four were the biggest predictors of a failing relationship. Its all based on actual research, too. Good stuff.

Neutral. The moral decision is whatever promotes happiness for the couple and potential child. What that is depends on the individuals involved.

Bet this also applies to men, too. Fits with other data, and it all makes perfect sense. The mature and college educated are more ready for marriage; the traditional are less likely to give up on a marriage. I don't think divorce is necessarily a bad thing, however, so I wouldn't say that this implies that women with conservative values are better marriage material. If the marriage goes south, that traditional woman may cling to a marriage long after it's dead.

I know what you mean, kinda! In the past, my internet arguments were about atheism, so I'm familiar... The use of evidence, or lack there of, for TRP reminds me of some of those debates. It starts with a whole bunch of assumptions, then goes back to cherry pick evidence to justify it. Like, there are entire fields of study devoted to asking these kinds of questions.

It really isn't a problem. Lately I've been watching the Metal Gear Sold V: Phantom Pain trailers over and over again, like a sad, obsessed puppy. They involves shooting, explosions, murder, torture, and some kind of sequence involving a flaming unicorn. I am not a torturing explosion murderer. Fantasies are fantasies for a reason. Ravishment or rape fantasies are specifically constructed by writers to play out in a certain way. The reactions of both characters can be controlled to produce the r…

It is more the context of the partner count than the count itself. Someone with a low partner count comes off as a little less intimidating to me. It often indicates an introverted personality, and that's how I am. A high partner count suggests extroversion and social skills, which I find impressive. That is, unless that partner count included a lot of short, failed relationships. Other factors matter more than the number. Getting really drunk and picking up random people doesn't appeal to me. A…

What about different laws? Marital rape wasn't always thought of as rape, or instance. Or women might be expected to marry their rapist. From Wikipedia.... During the first half of the 20th century, in Italy, like in many other places, rape victims were often expected and forced to marry their rapist. In 1965, Franca Viola, a 17-year-old girl from Sicily, created a sensation when she refused to marry the man who kidnapped and raped her. In refusing this "rehabilitating marriage" to the perpetrat…

I don't think it's her fault that she was being groped, I think it's her fault for not doing anything about it. And of course it's a problem. But the problem is simply that that guy is an asshole. So, it is her fault, in the end... I mean, check out the language you're using here. I know that were trying to convince each other of our position...and you may not be inclined to do it...But I would really, really appreciate it if you consider what I'm going to say here instead of dismissing it immed…

This appears to be a common misconception... Culture isn't one thing. There are lots of cultural forces at work. "Rape culture" is the word for those cultural forces. The strength of those forces varies. Addressing rape culture isn't about accusing an entire society of being terrible or something. It's about pointing out problematic aspects of the culture and confronting them.
/r/PurplePillDebate22/03/14 01:34 AM

It's not "a rape culture". It's "rape culture". Big difference. Rape culture doesn't mean that an entire culture is pro-rape. It is referring to the parts that do make excuses for it, like Mr. Legitimate Rape.

It's not a matter of either/or. Its not just one or the other. Here's an account from a teacher talking about rape and consent with their class...It's actually about the Steubenville case. accidentaldevotional.com/2013/03/19/the-day-i-taught-how-not-to-rape/ I realized then that some of my kids were genuinely confused. “How can she be raped?” they asked, “She wasn’t awake to say no.” There are also some comments on the Steubenville case if you scroll down on this page. What we do have happening is the term "rape" being used for anything sexual (or even just seemingly sexual) that a woman doesn't like even if she's responsible for it happening and consented to it. Most people don't call random things that aren't rape rape. The idea that society somehow supports that is ridiculous. I don't see why you bothered to link to that one individual story of one individual woman. I'm pretty sure the majority of people think that's unacceptable behavior. There's no cultur…

shrugs I dunno, the term was like that when I found it. I think the word culture can be used that way, though. Nerd culture, for instance. Cultures are weird. They send mixed messages. Fighting is wrong, but it also proves your toughness. Killing is wrong, unless it's a member of group X. Money doesn't matter, but you'd better make lots of it. Pre-marital sex is amazing and immoral. Yeah, there are a lot of those mixed-messages about sex and relationships. No means no except when it doesn't and …

Its just semantics, really. One could argue that the term "rape culture" makes it sound like it means the entire culture is pro-rape. That's not how it is meant. Anyone using it that way is giving the wrong impression. America may not have a "murder culture", but I think many of us might be willing to use the term "gun culture", or "gang culture". Think of rape culture as being like that. While anyone can rape anyone, it is a very gendered crime. Who rapes who, and why, and how others react is d…

I call that emotional stupidity. No one in their right mind would be upset with her for moving away from that guy and yelling something along the lines of "stop touching me!" Maybe she feels that way because she thinks she should have done more. She should have moved further away and yelled at him. Maybe she's thinking exactly what you're thinking: it's her fault. I guess a guy continually groping a girl even after she pulls his hands away isn't the problem. He's never the problem.

Why do rates of rape vary across time and space? Why do reactions to rape differ in different cultures and contexts?
/r/PurplePillDebate21/03/14 11:46 PM

There are organizations devoted to reducing suicide. Does that mean we have a suicide culture? Sure, maybe. I know some places do have unusually high suicide rates because of culture. Suicide culture could perhaps be seen as a subset of ableism.

Well, yeah. It's really broad. Rape Culture: Aspects of a culture that facilitate and/or excuse rape. On the extreme end, you have places where women are expected to cover themselves from head to toe, and if they are raped, they are to blame. On the less extreme end, you have people calling a a woman accusing a famous man of rape a lying whore. I was just reading about a young woman's experience about going on a date with a boy. He kept groping her during a movie despite her attempts to move awa…

I think you're viewing rape culture as an either/or thing, when there is a lot of variation. For example, marital rape was once not seen as rape in Western countries. Nowadays, it is. However, some groups or individuals actually still have that mindset. So, you have a reduction in rape culture as societal attitudes change.

"Officially not a thing, says RAINN" is an oversimplification. Part of it depends on what is actually meant by "rape culture". Not sure they even actually get the whole concept of "rape culture"? It seems that their aversion to the term seems to be more about distancing themselves from feminist language than anything else. In fact, the idea of having an organization devoted to reducing rape is non-nonsensical without the concept of rape culture. Rape culture consists of aspects of culture which …

You've kinda proven my point. It's the depression that makes it really crippling, though not getting sex might bring about that downward slide. Someone who is not having the sex they want but is not depressed, however, isn't caught in a negative feedback loop. They have one problem, and that problem is not having sex.

Right they are different things, although there is also a ton of overlap. Cultivating happiness, as you say, is critically important to both. Which is why just saying "get happy" "be positive" is not advice. Its more like a statement of one overarching goal. The advice would be describing concrete things (tactics) people could do to get closer to that goal, based on a set of strategic assumptions. For example meditation and exercise have been shown to be effective in healing depression. Telling …

I guess people with chronic depression just need to be told how easy it is and then they would feel better. I guess its time to start pulling anti-anxiety medication and anti-depressants out of pharmacies, and make it illegal for insurance companies to cover therapy. What's the point? If you just tell people to be happy that's all the advice they need. Depression and attracting women are two different things. Depression is one thing. Attracting women involves a bunch of things. Maybe not so much preconceptions, but negative ways of behaving and thinking. All women behave in a certain way and you just need to follow the rules to catch one. Women are strange, mysterious beings that are totally different from men. How can you not know how the number system works? It's obviously subjective, and in every case that I've ever heard of, it's based on physical attractiveness ONLY. So basically what you do is assign a number based on your personal evaluation of where that person falls on a scale of 1-10, where 10 is the hottest of the hot, and 1 is the ugliest of the ugly. People's assessments will vary to some degree, but in general, these numbers are an effective shorthand method of describing overall physical…

A man who uses a numerical scale to rank people in terms of attractiveness and wants ladies with a significantly higher ranking sounds like an ass. I am totally comfortable not helping an ass. My advice for him is to stop being an ass before doing anything else.

Well, this has really clarified things for me. TRP is about ugly men who want to get only the most attractive women. Not just women they happened to be attracted to. Women that are recognized as attractive by society as a whole. A woman with a high numerical rank. You know the whole thing about women being people? It's true. Attractive Women aren't just Attractive Women. They're people, with unique thoughts, feelings, desires lusts, failings, and quirks. How does an ugly guy attract an attractiv…

Some people are oblivious to themselves. I am not. For a feminist to say she wants a "high status man", or a "manly man" would kind of betray her ideology. So I highly doubt she will say the truth. How would those betray her ideology? The problem with TRP is that it tends to turn things with a grain of truth in them into entire ideological frameworks without regard for nuance. Cultures all have certain ideals of beauty and longstanding gender roles. That is going to affect people. However, those…

what makes you so sure you have the same experiances to share as any other heterosexual woman I'm not sure. I don't see how we reach that conclusion. My conclusion was that if there is no pointing teaching sex ed then there's no point in teaching anything about attracting women. I'm not dodging the question. I didn't think it was worth and answer because it is obvious that there are couples where one is considered more attractive than the other by mainstream standards. There are all kinds of constructs. Some are more correct than others. Some are more evil than others. First, TRP is wrong. Second, TRP promotes evil ideas that can and have hurt people. The interesting thing about so called "Sex positive feminism' is it's only 'sex positive' for women. Only if you think the only way to have sex is to be an asshole to women. It isn't new info. You think they don't know about rubbers? You think they don't know what 'no' means? There's a lot more to sex education than that, I hope you realize. If I want to fuck someone because of something, I am pretty sure that is of a sexual nature. A guy displays traits I like? The entire 'him' becomes more attractive. All I care about is that red pill philosophy models it quite accurately. But does it really? Like, with an actual individual person a man is actually dealing with? And if that's all that matters, why all these attempts at proving it through bio-truths and whatnot?

Incorrect. Culture doesn't just exist. It is reinforced by many individuals. It's taught. It's one thing to be aware of cultural norms, and it is another to treat them as rules to be followed, or "how things really are". Almost inevitably, it ends up with claims about innate traits. I mean, consider how this would look if you were talking about race. Because really, I see people talking like this about race on the internets all the time.

There are probably some innate behavioral differences between men and women as groups, but I doubt they are significant. Social factors influence behavior so much attributing anything purely to biology is risky business.

Thing is, if someone is depressed enough, they'll sabotage themselves. Have you ever seen someone online complaining about their awful romantic life, radiating so much bitterness, self-loathing, and despair that its obvious why no one could stand them? It might work for those who aren't struggling too much. Learning social skills and putting themselves out there would help them gain confidence. Still, depression can make it much harder to maintaining a healthy romantic relationship, or even impo…

There's a difference between talking about your feelings and experiences and talking over the feelings and experiences of others. I'll be more concrete: There's a difference between making a thread about an issue that you wish to express your feelings about and going on to an existing thread with a different topic and making the conversation all about that issue. When the issue you are concerned about is how men aren't allowed to express their feelings, unlike women, it comes off as pretty ironi…

Well, that's comparing an action to a feeling. Not really sure how to contrast them. Are you talking about trying to find a relationship and failing? One can do that without feeling that they will never find love. Trying and failing to get a relationship is still exercising agency. The problem is that you can't control another human being.

What is better: a) Stay depressed from loneliness. This isn't how depression works, at least not usually. You don't just get depressed (talking about the clinical kind) because you're single. Someone filled with self-esteem and hope isn't going to become depressed because they haven't gotten a partner (yet). Someone depressed could have the most loving, attentive, and affectionate partner in the world and still feel alone. Improve yourself, but do not approach women. Try to not hurt people when …

That is correct. Following the teachings of TRP will allow him to destroy those beliefs and allow him to go from being alone to spinning multiple plates. TRP helps a dude figure out how to have the sort of relationships he wants in a healthy framework. That's what TRP is there for, helping people right themselves in their relationships with women. There's some good stuff there. (I think that there's a definite TRP trend towards trying to boost male self-esteem by denigrating women at the expense…

Paying a prostitute seems like a bad idea, but I don't think it was meant to be insulting. It sounded more like a suggestion of a practical way of getting sexual needs met without investing time and energy in a relationship. Yes. Doesn't mean its necessarily a justified belief. This is especially true if he is still struggling a lot with depression. It's very easy to see a relationship as a solution to one's self-esteem issues. When you don't have a healthy sense of yourself, you can be taken advantage of. For example, is a depressed, desperate guy who fears loneliness going to leave a bad or even abusive relationship easily? I actually did think most people knew what I meant by the KKK. I guess many people don't really think about the fact that they are still a thing that exists today. I wonder if men bring their feelings up in conversations such as this one because women have a tendency to focus the conversation around how mens actions and/or words make them feel? You think this shows hypocrisy, but you're wrong. It's one thing to express feelings as a male and about men's issues. It is another thing to turn a conversation about others' feelings and make it all about you. You're using expressing your feelings as an excuse to ignore those of others.

That probably has something to do with my own personal habits and upbringing, as its becoming more clear to me that lots of people don't grow up thinking the same way. I was responding like a woman instead of a man, and what she was really asking for wasn’t answers to her co…

On one side is "man-hating". The other side is "feminist-hating". Not a fair comparison in the first place. Man-hating is not an essential component of feminism, but feminism-hating is an essential component of being an MRA...and I'd argue that a significant amount of MRAs descend into outright woman-hating. There's also the matter of the relative importance of the online community to feminism compared to MRAs. MRAs are very much defined by their online presence. If the online presence is a mess…

It's one thing not to be attracted to feminism because of that impression; it is another to rage against it. I'm white, but I got over the whole white privilege thing and managed not to take it personally. I have class privilege, but I don't freak out if people rage against economic inequality. Same goes for being straight and being cis.

What do the very successful have to do with the average man? Nothing. They are nothing alike. Except for both having dicks. It's kinda hard to believe that men feel worthless just for being men when they have plenty of positive representations of people like them. There's a giant difference between not being dependent on men and not needing men. Women, or any group would shit if people all of a sudden said, "we don't need you." Men enjoy a woman's softness. We're like yin and yang, we have complementary energies. Yet the minute a man suggests that men and women are different around here, it turns into "stop dehumanizing us", "that's a generalization, I'm not not like that", etc. Whelp, maybe think about it this way. You essentially just said that there's something wrong with me. The vast majority of that stuff didn't appear just because of feminism. In fact, it's usually back to the old traditional gender roles. Men are strong and powerful, women are helpless and in need of saving. Then, once you start focusing on women's issues, you end up with a strange imbalance, with awareness of women's issues coexisting with traditional gender roles.

Hmmmm. Well, I'm not going to argue that those aren't good things to do and attractive traits. Keep that stuff up. If that's what you consider to be the core of TRP, I would agree that its pretty self-evident.

A penis is just one part of a person, not the entirety of the person. The thing is, how do you know he's denying anything about himself? What you actually are doing is telling someone else how he should behave and what he is. This is the problem when we talk about "natural" femininity and masculinity. It actually represses the individual and puts them into a box. For example, I am a lady. I have some traits that would be considered feminine by most standards, and some that would be considered ma…

While I see what you mean, part of the reason I disagree is that being anti-feminist is a major aspect of a lot of MRA stuff. On the other hand, feminists aren't anti-men's issues. There are actually pro-feminist men's groups already out there. I'm talking in vague generalities here, but I think that MRAs as they are now see gains for women as equivalent to losses for men. Feminism, while it isn't perfect, still has its sights set on changing cultural norms. MRAs seem to be unknowingly attacking…

There's justified insecurity and unjustified insecurity. No, they feel they're being devalued because media is bombarding them with messages saying they're being devalued- that society doesn't need them. This is hardly an irrational urge. I'd argue that this is pretty irrational. In the US at least, our culture is filled with prominent, respected men. They're everywhere. As for why it's offensive, outside of being rejected by women as a gender and told you're useless? Ah, but who said anything a…

I'm not accusing all men. I'm talking about about vague cultural forces, and certain RP and MGTOW types. (Okay, basically all MGTOW types.) This is what I mean about the insecurity, though. Why the need to emphasize how important men are in comparison to women? No one suggested that men were less valuable than women. Women don't need men, but men don't need women either (beyond the reproductive aspect). People of either or any gender are worthwhile individuals in their own right.

Damnit. I actually wrote "affected", thought I'd made a mistake, and deleted it. I was so close. SO CLOSE... But there's nothing actually stopping women from pursuing stem careers. They're just choosing not to. But when a woman decides not to, it's because society's pressuring her. When a man doesn't, that's just his own choice. But that's not how the world works, on the larger scale. Look a chart! A tiny, tiny chart! http://www.nature.com/scitable/content/ne0000/ne0000/ne0000/ne0000/101341640/2…

Here's an attempt from a BP lady to empathize with some BP men. For at least some BP men, I suspect they are motivated by their own relationships with women. They see women in their lives that are not as shallow TRP typically portrays them as, and are offended by the insult to them. Others probably find the mindset that draws such a distinct line between them and women oppressive and limiting. Those are just guesses, as TBP is less cohesive than TRP.

I'm not going to deny that some feminists can be shitty, but I don't think it's quite the same. In general, feminists are the ones on the defensive. When I see men's issues brought up to feminists, it is often framed as an attack. Men's right's vs feminism. Lot's of men's issues only started getting attention because of feminism's progress. After all, it encourages the questioning of gender norms.

I think that the whole model of human attraction thing is greatly exaggerated in its influence. For example, you say that women still seek socially dominant males because of evolution, but studies have shown that the more egalitarian a society is, the less common it is. In other words, the more socially acceptable and normal it is for women to provide for themselves, the less often they prioritize social dominance in a male.

But that's the thing. It's motivated by insecurity. They feel that somehow they're being devauled because women don't "need" them, this upsets them, so they throw a fit about how important they are. Still, it's all an irrational urge. Why are they offended by the idea that women don't "need" them? Why? The insecurity seems to be based entirely on the idea that women need to be disempowered for them to have a sense of self-worth.
/r/PurplePillDebate03/02/14 09:48 PM

But were most men barred from voting because they were men? No. The point is that there have been cultural forces demanding women (and men) be confined to a certain position for a long time. Because the overall culture treats men and women differently in media. The attractiveness of women is still treated as a higher priority than the attractiveness of men. Consider the stats on how women in politics are far more likely to get comments about their looks and clothing choice than the men are. There's also the difference in the relative visibility of female and male models. Female models are used more often for more things. The fashion world is also mostly dominated by women's fashion.

Sleeping around and being immodest isn't wrong, though. Holding a sexist double standard is. No one thinks about the evolutionary details of high partner count in reality. Just look at different cultures throughout the world throughout history. There are cultures where everyone has sex with everyone and no one cares. Then you have western cultures which treat female virginity as something special. See, this is the problem with jumping straight to evolution as an explanation.

True, it wasn't the best example, but I couldn't think of anything good at the time. In general, thinking about the complexities of human interaction in such a way is not a good idea. Having a hard time articulating this. shrugs helplessly Sorry.

Here's the thing: thinking of yourself as a prize worthy of being competed for is all about confidence. It means you don't need validation from an outside source. Men should talk themselves out of their repulsion if their repulsion is based on hypocrisy and sexism. If they can't, they should at least acknowledge their repulsion is based on hypocrisy and sexism. As I said, this isn't about entitlement. No one is entitled to a romantic relationship with anyone else. It's about not holding irrational, hypocritical views.
/r/PurplePillDebate24/01/14 02:44 AM

Just because others have different perspectives doesn't mean those perspectives are necessarily reasonable. Most of us don't deal with scenarios on a daily basis that can only be dealt with by a heroic male with sufficiently wide shoulders. If we're talking about practicality, why are we discussing how men should treat women in their everyday lives by bringing of extreme circumstances in which they might possibly may get to play hero by virtue of their maleness?
/r/PurplePillDebate18/01/14 11:14 AM

Those are kind of...rare scenarios, with the exception of the last one. I really don't care about the sex/gender of a person protecting me, or assisting me. Well, why not? That's what chivalry is, at its heart. A variety of polite and helpful behaviors,, but directed only from men towards women. If a man chooses not to extend consideration towards me purely because I don't "need" a man, that just shows his low moral character. Thanks for the response. Part of the reason I tend to disagree with TRP is because the scenario described doesn't seem to have anything to do with gender. The second "Where to eat dinner?" scenario is obnoxious whether it occurs with a romantic partner, friend, or family member. The man improving himself to compensate for the woman's weakness strikes me as setting an extremely low standard for female behavior. I would feel like an ass if I was shoving all the hard decisions onto a significant ot…

Thanks for your response! I think it goes without saying that relationships are different depending on the individuals involved. However, there are still different relationship "rules" or "models". For example, I could say "Couples should have regular sex" or "Couples should communicate their sexual desires and try to find a compromise that makes them both happy". The second rules is superior because it applies to...well, just about every couple in existence. The first may be good advice for mos…

I wouldn't call it crazy. Three abortions for your husband's sake comes off as quite the tragic, dramatic sacrifice. Tragic and dramatic and selfless enough to blind people to other matters. Attacking him is still stupid, though. Not his fault his wife acted like a moron, at least from what we know. It's not the first time I've seen people on reddit slam people for things unjustifiably, though, so I don't find it that "crazy". The fact that she had abortions for his sake (even if he didn't know …

Having three abortions in secret to keep your husband around because children are a deal-breaker comes off as a tragic sacrifice. There's also the fact that the post is about his own issues with trust, while the person who seems to be suffering more is the wife. "Wife has three abortions for my sake and I feel bad about it" doesn't come off as sympathetic to many people. I wouldn't say you're exactly right about the double standard. The example you gave about a guy being infertile and lying abou…

I'm not sure rate is the right word, but they certainly pay attention to them . Most women do, though of course their preferences vary. They're not. TRP deserves it. Nah. TRP displays a problematic worldview that deserves to have attention drawn to it. No No It's possible, depending on what's being measured. It's okay for a wife not to want to have sex with her husband. She's entitled to her own needs and desires, or lack there of. The question is what the husband wants, and if the couple can me…

There's a difference between moving the goalposts and clarifying/being more specific. Moving the goalposts implies that I am requesting someone meet some standard of evidence, and then deciding that isn't enough. I mean, how can I have moved the goal posts if I essentially agreed that the issues trans* people face in regards to sex are serious business?

Or maybe there's a double standard because there's a double standard? A man who sleeps with a lot of women may have something going on in the sex department, but it doesn't suggest husband material to me. Let's assume the Red Pill way of viewing the world is correct for the moment. I, as a woman, can get sex whenever I want. Do I really want to waste my time with a man who might run off the moment he decides he's more sexually attracted to some random younger woman? Sex is so very important to m…

Raging and debating aren't mutually exclusive. Why are you even replying to me? You don't think I'm here to debate, so presumably you don't want to debate me. Ergo, the only explanation is that you wanted to vent your annoyance at me for no greater purpose.

They would be an exception. While I mentioned psychological and health issues as exceptions, there are others I would consider reasonable. Being trans*, or a part of another group society deems 'unacceptable' is one of them. I do not think entitled able-bodied cis white heterosexual males who hate women for not giving them sex and lament their beta status would fall into that category, though.

There's a difference between treating women as interchangeable and wanting to have sex with one. But really, my point is that those men who are resentful of the rejections of women bring it on themselves by approaching random women instead of making an effort to seek out women who want what they want.

Isn't the whole being a slut but wanting a virgin thing...a little hypocritical? I mean, does a good girl really deserve some philanderer who will screw with any woman? I mean, it's one thing if we're talking about sex, but those kind of men aren't known for their ability to commit.

Actually, they're pretty similar. Relationships are all relationships. I...I'm not sure what to make of the fact that you think that a man should choose a partner with honesty and maturity...primarily so she doesn't divorce him and make him pay child support for another man's children. As I said, "...getting rejected isn't pleasant...but it should not be soul crushing..." It is unfair that men are expected to approach women, but on an individual level, a person can't just wait for opportunity to fall into their lap. Rejection sucks, but men (and women) need to deal with it. If women approached men as much as women, would that make rejection any less painful?

The thing is, there's more going on than just sex here. Compared to men, women are less physically strong. They are also taught to fear the threat of rape. There is also the whole pregnancy thing. Factors like this would make a women far less likely to have sex with a stranger. Men, on the other hand, are not socialized to feel threatened by women, and rape against men is rarely discussed. Arg, I think I remember something about a study similar to this, where it was set up to avoid that...But...…

Yes, getting rejected isn't pleasant...but it should not be soul crushing to someone with a healthy sense of self-esteem. Rejections are a part of asking people out. If there were five times more men than women, I could see women being privileged in terms of potential partners, but that isn't the case. There are as many women as men.

I am confused. What are we talking about??? Uuuur? Well I'll just go along with it. Maybe, but someone will always construe a man "complaining" about anything as whining. It's just how it is. I admit I'm having a bit of trouble remembering my own like of thought when I wrote this. I shall try to retrace it. First, I wasn't just referring to sex in this post. I should note that I'm not just talking about attempts at hooking-up. This also applies to approaching a woman in the hopes of starting a long term romantic relationship. Some of my post was framed with that in mind. I do think that men should be more selective when it comes to looking for casual sex, though. A guy should determine the best ways encounter women looking for casual sex, and focus his attention there. And sex may not be a relationship, but it still requires two people and a sort of…

/r/PurplePillDebate21/12/13 01:11 AM

....????? Okay, I'll try to be more clear. There's a difference between venting frustrations and Bad Guy's whining. Bad Guy makes no effort to find a woman who shares his preference for casual hook-ups. Instead, he approaches random women. The majority of women going about their daily business are not into sex with men they know nothing about. Bad Guy is rejected, and makes a whole lot of women feel uncomfortable. To top it off, he whines about how "unfair" the situation is, when it isn't unfair…

I don't think it has much to do with women having complicated preferences. The concept of the man as the provider still exists in our culture. Heck, Breaking Bad is a great portrayal of that idea.

Sorry, but viewing a certain category of humans as interchangeable is pathological. A guy who wants a woman to have sex with is just fine. Let's say Guy the guy wants to go get some sex. How can he go about that? Good Guy does his research, looking into groups online and off that encourage the mingling of people for casual sex. Bad Guy approaches random women and tries to hit on them. When they reject his advances, he whines about how unfair it all is. Some men view women as interchangeable with…

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean its unfair. Its plenty fair. ...Lower caste males? Yah know, 'lower caste' females do exist... The concept of ranking really doesn't make any sense when it comes to individual relationships. Its about the quality, not some arbitrary quantity.

Okay, it sounds like you're falling right into the mindset I described. From the tone of your post, when it comes to relationships, you view women as interchangeable. I specifically mentioned that I wasn't just referring to physical attractiveness in my post, but the only standards you mention are some numbers on an arbitrary scale of what society considers attractive. You say that you can't afford to be picky because so many women reject you...but that shows something else missing. Women are pe…

I'm kinda raising an eyebrow at some of those statistics, but I'm too lazy to check the studies right now. But I could be wrong. We've reached a weird point in gender relations where feminist ideals exist alongside traditional gender norms. Feminists managed to draw attention to violence against women perpetrated by men they were in relationships with, and now action has been taken against it. Now we are acutely aware of men abusing women. But the old norms didn't disappear. Women are still seen…

Hm, that doesn't necessarily surprise me. Women have moved further into the work force and out of the home...but men haven't moved into the home. Both men and women are overworked outside of the home, with less time and energy available to devote to domestic and family matters. Doesn't suggest anything to me about proper gender roles, though.
/r/PurplePillDebate17/12/13 05:46 PM

How exactly do you differentiate between 'natural' and 'culturally conditioned'? I mean, It doesn't take much knowledge of history to know that women were often forced into their 'natural' role. You're just picking the culturally conditioned role you prefer for women and claiming it is the natural one.

I think giving gender-specific advice is a terrible idea in general, with perhaps a few exceptions. Statistically, women probably due place more value on a man's resources than men place on a woman's. But for any given individual women, how important is a man's status compared to any other trait he may have? Its probably a lot lower than a host of other factors. Another problem with giving gender specific advice is that it encourages men and women to see each other as interchangeable. Instead of…

I'm pretty well convinced at this point that TRP mistakes the fact that a strong partner of either sex is generally preferable to a weak one. If a partner or partners in a relationships are 'meh' in terms of decisiceness, assertiveness, confidence, and proactiveness, either partner developing those traits will be a net positive. Problem is you guys interpret this as meaning that women universally want a man to lead them. This encourage guys to look down on the women they interact with, seeing th…

The great thing about being the gatekeeper of sex is that I can have sex any time I want, whenever I want. Just whip out that sex and start having it. It's much easier than having to deal with a guy. And all of these numerous adaptations males have evolved NEVER circumvent female choice? Moving on from ducks, which are not humans anyway, you didn't address the other part of my response. Science is about observing reality. When reality contradicts beliefs, those beliefs should be reexamined. Why should men lead in a relationship? Patriarchy is a aspect of kyriarchy. Kyriarchy encompasses all kinds of intersecting systems that privilege one group over another: race, class, religion, sex, etc. Patriarchy deals with oppression in regards to men having privilege over women.
