I know this is not quite FDS-y—-but I can’t wait to get rid of it. My father was really abusive to me and my brother growing up and I hate that I bear his name. His entire family has been so toxic and hurtful for DECADES to my sweet mom and I hate that I am in any way associated with it. Less importantly, it also happens to be 11 letters long and I swear I’ve collectively wasted weeks of my life spelling it for customer service rep or explaining the pronunciation or just having to laugh off bein…

(Reading this tidbit, rubbing my temples, trying not to do a rage screech and wake up my dog ) “Okay. Okay. She is 25. They are not married. She isn’t answering his calls or texts. There is hope for my fellow melanin-rich curly girl realizing she is so much better than this parasite.” (Pre-FDS I had a bf who told me he didn’t like my hair when it was curly as much as he liked when I took an hour to blow dry and flat iron it…so I did. Every day. And I lost about 6 inches of length over time due t…

Ladies, cringe cringe cringe confession time but yes I dated one of these. He masked himself very very well for a couple months. But HO MY GOD. When the guard dropped I was horrified to discover this isn’t just a meme—no there is a REAL LIFE PERSON who in fact sees this very meme itself as part of society’s general vilification of straight white men, that society hates people like him so much that they would prefer it if straight white men were dead, and it’s so hard to exist with that kind of h…

Holy shït you just blew my mind. I never connected that. I always thought that was the first solution because they could more easily tease out how much of this systemic issue was elicited by the mind-effery of “to be loved by god, to be a good priest, you have to fight your attachment needs & reproductive imperative every day until you die” versus how much is due to “you are a person who subconsciously feels ashamed of your sexual urges and so you are subconsciously drawn to a profession where s…

Also highly recommend the book written by a female author, Emily Nagoski, PhD. called Come As You Are! I consider myself pretty sex-educated and female-body-aware—but holy crap, she blew my mind with stats and stuff that made me like “oh my god?? I thought that was just me because I’m an anxious lil pup??” It has made me much more helpful and informed when my friends want to talk about issues they’re experiencing.

I loved your post and was preparing to write a comment about how glad I was to see I wasn’t alone in this (cleanliness is my “kïnk” lol) then I got to that edit. Folks, if the expectation is that everyone has to write a dissertation of a disclaimer/explainer covering all bases in every post, and we’re not going to make an effort to assume positive intent or operate from a place trust….then we’re just re-creating the conditions in which our emotionally-abusive exes would get us to over-explain & …

Absolutely. When I read Margaret Atwood’s original (I think I read it when Hulu was teasing the first season of the show), it hit me how the women were being enslaved and raped, and how that was an everyday experience for black people who had been enslaved by white people. Except, of course, they didn’t get to live in the house and have nice meals and sleep in warm beds, so in that regard, Atwood’s dystopia was actually a step UP of the real lived experience. I don’t think the show portrayed as …

What makes me hope this might be fake (MUCH TO MY RELIEF) is that as someone who has a had a couple procedures in that region, what the doctors normally say is “nothing in the vagina for X weeks—no sex, no tampons, etc.” ….so just praying it is that and not yet another example of why young women should never marry older men.

Unless you have a medical condition for which multiple medical professionals have diagnosed & confirmed that weight loss is the only available treatment and if you see a registered dietician regularly to manage this condition—I’d ask you to consider re-evaluating the phrase “ideal weight.” My queen—if you are eating a variety of all foods in balance & moderation (Kale yes! Sigghhhh. This is why whenever I interact with young women I make an effort to subtlety/overtly emphasize the idea that they are extremely worthy and valuable regardless of whether they have a partner. I ask about their schoolwork and career goals and friendships and hobbies—I know they are getting enough people in their life asking them if they have a boyfriend, as if that’s all that matters. That message ingrained by society has taken me literally two decades to unlearn!!

Okay, THANK YOU—my friends look at me like I’m crazy when I say 5 years is the max age difference I would ever go for! I think I went on exactly one date when I was in my early 20s with someone my same age who had a modicum of emotional intelligence & maturity—so I think your suspicion is correct. As someone who has struggled with an eating disorder (and consequently seen my self-worth & body dramatically fluctuate)—-one of the most powerful things for me is realizing that when I am in a “healthy” body for me (which means not super skinny from starving myself) all of a sudden the number of men who want to talk to me (not just hit on me, I mean talk to me in general) went way down. Absolutely. Pretty privilege is really just different combinations of various aspects anti-fatness, colorism, ageism, ableism, racism, class/wealth privilege, etc.—all of which are powerful systems of oppression which have tangible & quantifiable impacts on the health, safety, education, housing, etc. conditions of marginalized communities. The thing that is interesting about your comment is that (I think unintentionally) you are laying out precisely why the patriarchy is a problem. Both men & women are invested in keeping it in place (when you-with-no-makeup got critiques from both genders) and even when you do perform the behaviors to conform—you still do not have power, you are still at the mercy of how men perceive you. I think “winning” is when you can get to a place personally where your self-esteem is completely disentangled…

I think Captain Marvel was the first movie in the action genre that blew my mind WIDE fucking open by showing me what a film looks like when the creators actively protect the visuals or characters from centering male-gaze or pleasing a male audience. I think I’m not understanding what the term “liberal feminism” means on here. I consider myself a liberal and a feminist and FDS core principles are very much in sync with what feminism means to me. But it sounds like you’re saying that …

I’m with you on “wbu” but I will just note that Twitter syntax has evolved to sometimes use “u” humorously. I will see highly educated writers, journalists, activists etc. (who normally exhibit perfect command of grammar) use “u” in specific contexts to create an element of faux-nonchalance or to indicate their words are not to be taken seriously/literally. That said, guessing this is not at all what you’re seeing in these men, so un-match away! :)

If I get to the point in life of having 5 true friends—5 people, each of whom would raise their hands to be in the waiting room while I got surgery, 5 people who I can feel free to cry in front of, 5 people who would travel across the country to see me, 5 people who would always see the best in me, 5 people who love me so much that they would rather lose me as a friend than not say something that everyone else is afraid to, 5 people who will be there to celebrate my mountaintop victory and remin…

You know I sooo often read someone’s comment in this sub and go “WAIT is it possible this girl and I share an ex??” Because that’s how eerily similar the words/actions/tactics of toxic exes are. I swear they must all get it from some kind of pamphlet.

So freaking true. It reminds me of this SNL sketch called Girl At A Bar which accurately/tragically/hilariously points out this exact phenomena!

Horrible, horrible, horrible. They really know how to appear to be selfless in a way that will strategically advantage them. I’m so glad this person is out of your life and I hope karma comes for his ass soon.

Yoooo this shit is the most insidious of all. Because now they have all the jargon to make it seem like are HV (“I hear you” “Thank you for sharing that.” “I’m trying to be vulnerable” “that’s just not my love language” “I think you are deflecting” “I’m on my own journey” “I believe in compromise” “I want to be accepted for who I am”) so that all their red flags get a quick spray paint of green and make it incredibly difficult for you to suss out the issue.

....this is so baffling. My love, bake a loaf of bread for yourself this Saturday. Call up your girls when it’s piping hot out the oven. Slather pieces of your crusty steamy bread in butter and dish gossip in the kitchen of YOUR HOUSE that YOU PAID FOR with the job YOU HAVE thanks to the degree YOU EARNED and deeply drink in the satisfaction of knowing that absolutely nothing that you have—from the flour in your pantry to your diploma on the wall to the bed you sleep in—-can be taken from you by…

Queen—hard hard hard agree here. I’ve been doing a lot of work (read: ranting, lecturing, scolding, sending articles & infographics, challenging, questioning) over the years to ensure that my younger brother becomes one of the rare HVM in the desi community. But I think I do this out of guilt...because I very consciously rule out any desi man for no reason other than that he is a desi man. (Which of course, is codified by all the reasons you listed above). I sometimes struggle with if this is en…

I’d bet my 401k that she’s in fact way hotter than him and I hope she finds FDS soon.

Oh my goodness I will never forget when an OLD match sent me his phone number to text and HIS GIRLFRIEND HAD HIS PHONE WHEN I TEXTED very innocuously “Hi, this is Kiwi from Tinder.” She was livid with me, called me all kinds of names, and I literally was like “girl, all I did was swipe; your BOYFRIEND IS ON TINDER so why is this who you’re mad at right now?????”

Bi here! New to FDS, have considerable commenting history in other subs! Women can be Low Value too—a lot of the vetting advice is helpful for both genders! But more to the point, rarely does the “average woman” I meet while dating come anywhere close to the number of red flags as the men do. That’s why yes, the content posted most often does refer to male-female relationships...but buddy, that’s not caused by homophobia. That’s a reflection of how society encourages, permits & excuses LV behavi…

Please do not apologize for speaking your truth here!! You deserve to take up space—and as an added bonus, by sharing your experience you are helping other women realize moments when they too were taken advantage of.

Oh my gosh this completely reminds of me of the little red flag that was raised when my LVM ex said to me with a mix of delight & surprise “You read!!” Like, books? You’re considering this to be a special or rare thing amongst women? Have you met...like more than 2 women before? Because that’s precisely how many women in my life do not read for enjoyment or learning !!
