I've been to Yangshan couple times(new Shanghai deep water terminal) and there are completely AI trucks that carry containers around the port, unmanned cranes loading/discharging containers and small storage cranes. Roterdam is the same, but I cannot tell myself. On the other hand the traffic around China, Singapore. Me too. I'm 3rd Mate, 3 contracts so far on bigger container ships in Peter Dohle. It's a good way to visit a lot of exotic places and interact with very diverse people and cultures around the world. It's not so great as before, let's say 20 years ago, but still fun. I'm a bit worried about AI and automated ships, but according to many of my more experienced coworkers, it's a very long way to go at the moment.

Hmm, didn't know that about the navy, on container ships (probably on other merchant vessels as well) there is only an officer during daytime, and officer and a lookout at night. More and more ships have internet access now, but I think the bigger problem is too much bureaucracy, so most of the time the officer is sitting on the computer doing useless paperwork and just peeking from time to time on the radar.

I'm a navigator on container ships and from my experience I can tell that warships either avoid commercial ships, or just call on the VHF 30 min or so in advance and make sure there won't be any dangerous situation. I have no idea how it's possible to hit a tanker, a big, non-monoeuvrable cow with a small, fast ship. On the other hand, if the watch officer is alone on the bridge and instead of actually navigating is sitting on Tinder, everything is possible.

Could be. I work on container ships, and there is no regulated order, but some people have specific duties during boarding: cook brings water, officers bring logbook and emergency radiotelephone, someone disconnects locking pins etc. Captain doesn't stay and sink with the ship, but must make sure everyone else is ready to safely evacuate.

I'm an 3rd officer on container ships. Duties are assigned based on position, so I mostly work alone, except for special events, like port approach or cargo operations. This career used to be very good, but sadly not anymore. Due to automation western seamen are not really needed and are getting replaced by 3rd world guys. Salaries are relatively low. So, unless you are from eastern Europe, Philippines, India, Ethiopia (!), or Nigeria (!!!) it's not really worth the trouble.
