Maybe you're thinking of Hasidim. Orthodox Jews generally date and possibly kiss, that's not absurd. Hasidim don't "date" and essentially have arranged marriages.

Hey! So it's the anniversary of when we decided to become committed to each other. I did mention it to him about a week prior, as well as a couple of days before. He just had a very busy day at work and forgot about it.

It's my desire too, to maybe make our relationship a little more romantic, however the issue is that I could have reacted differently. I instead chose to feel hurt by this, blaming him for something that wasn't really a big deal. Yeah, it's important to do romantic things from time to time, but it's more important to treat the other person with respect and empathy.

Not that there's ever an excuse for acting out like that, but being very pregnant and hormonal is as close to an excuse as you can get, especially given that you were in a new place. Thanks! He thankfully didn't hold a grudge this morning at all. He actually was even sweeter than usual.

It's definitely possible that the reason I have this view is that most of our friends aren't married (I'm 24, he's 27) so we don't hang out with many married couples. Also, the ones we do hang out with got married for necessity (like buying a house or getting pregnant). And even then that's like 2-3 couples that we see every 3-4 months or so.

Sure, it's a legal commitment, but I still fail to see how it's in anyway more sacred than what I described, aside in a financial sense.

Our philosophy on marriage and long term relationships is that the whole is equal to the sum of its parts. We don't believe in marriage being more important than the individuals. Two people who care about each other, engage in cohabitation, plan their lives together, go on adventures together, experience their lives together, and most importantly put each other above all other people, is what's valuable. Some people need that other force outside of themselves, but I don't believe it's necessary …

Aside from the whole married vs non marriage argument we were having before, the biggest reason why I became so upset was that I hurt him and unintentionally shit-tested him. That's why I cried. I couldn't believe that I made him feel bad, and I felt so guilty for doing that. You're spot on with that one.

That is exactly what happened, yes. I built something up in my head, without letting him know how much I cared about it. How could he have known that it was so important? Not only that, I think I placed the value on it way too high. When I thought about it more, I realized that not only did I unrightfully expect him to just know, but I also irrationally placed too high a value on a date, instead of other more important things in our relationship.

I understand your perspective. However, when I say "marriage" isn't important, I meant legally. Otherwise, our union is exactly like a marriage, aside from the paper. We don't see the need for a legal commitment when we have other symbols of the sacredness of our relationship.

I mean, yeah I probably would have felt better if he did, but in the end I can only control my own actions and not anyone else's. Isn't that the main tenet of trp and rpw - that you can only control yourself?

I'm still a little upset about how I acted last night but I need to just move on and keep this is mind. I'm generally really good at asking myself, "is this a big deal?" and putting the situation in perspective but I guess slip-ups happen.

It's the anniversary of when we decided we were in an LTR. We don't really value "marriage" for ourselves. We've decided that marriage is only a legal designation so it's irrelevant for us.

Yeah, we are both incredibly non-confrontational so we never ever yell at each other. Some people fight, but we just feel very guilty and sad. Then I cry. It's just negativity in a different way.

I knew all of this in the back of my mind - he sometimes didn't even remember how old I was exactly (which is honestly more funny than upsetting). I think that I just made a big deal out of nothing.

I don't think it's unreasonable to want to celebrate how long you've been dating if it's an LTR and you live together, especially when marriage for us isn't very important. I understand that some people have your perspective but it's just not the same as ours.

I realized this as well. I was going to include the arbitrary conventionality of it all in the post as well but was worried it would get too verbose. I just hate this all of this could have been avoided by my own actions. This mess resulted from my own inability to look at the situation objectively and instead I let my socially constructed values (which don't have any real logic) and emotions control my actions. I made bad decision after bad decision and realized it too late (I mean we're fine b…

We have a few things like this. When it comes to what I do for him, I give him manicures (I call them manlicures). He bites his nails so to kind of curb his need to and to stop his fingers from hurting I moisturize his hands, file his nails, and clean up his cuticles. When it comes to what we do for each other, we give each other back scratches at night before we go to sleep. One thing that he does is scratch my back where my bra presses into my back (I don't have enough bras that are the right …

You need to chill, maybe just a little bit. Nobody is perfect and you can't be 100% on point all the time. The key here is to not dwell on when you can't stick to your schedule. You gotta let go and think about what your next step is, now that you've messed up in some way. It is incredible stressful and time consuming to dwell on things. Look at your schedule - surely you have some wiggle room? Maybe prioritize your things so that there are a few things that absolutely must be done but then some…

I don't think that it's bad to take initiative on coming up with cool ideas for dates. That's not what is meant by giving up control. Giving up control means that you give up your need to always be in control. This doesn't mean you stop doing things - it means you don't always have to be right or in control of your situation and let someone else (but specifically, the man that you carefully choose) be in control of the situation. A simpler way of looking at it is letting someone else make the de…

There is no right answer as to which role a woman fills aside from the one that the man in the relationship should be the one to determine how to allocate resources. Sometimes he will decide that it's better for the woman to work, sometimes to stay at home, sometimes to be the main breadwinner, sometimes some combination. It doesn't matter what she does except for that it is the man that has the final say in what she does. (And if there is disagreement/conflict of interests then they should prob…

Your situation is so similar to mine. I also moved in with SO about 3/4 months ago and he basically takes care of everything financially (he makes more than enough and I am still in school but work part time). I s have trouble with this sometimes but I am definitely getting better at this. Yeah I do need to speak with some professors for sure, and while they are definitely knowledgable about the industry, I don't know how much life advice they can give me seeing as how they are all male (not that their advice doesn't mean much, but I won't get a female prospective from them). I'm thinking about maybe going for academia in conjunction with consulting, seeing as how both of those don't require extreme continuity with work. And thank you! I hope so too. We've been together for a little under 3 years and we currently live together. We haven't talked about marriage but we've spoken about "our wedding" and what kind of parents we'll be. There have been no formal conversations about it. I don't know how to approach it but I also don't think that I should. I'm not looking for a doctorate level degree in the nearby future - a masters doesn't take long and is highly employable.

Generally bf makes enough for the both of us plus probably for a child too. I still struggle with not feeling guilty about not being able to contribute significantly financially, but luckily he shows zero concern with me being essentially dependent on him. I know that with my education I can potentially obtain a career where I can make a LOT of money but generally speaking, my goal isn't to be a financial support (unless he wants that).

In the back of my mind I know this. My main question is more about (and I don't mean to say that a career discipline is better than another, but some do require more time and accreditation) going into a stem-oriented field. I suppose this decision in the end will have to take into consideration many things like financial stability, have many kids we have, location, etc. Right now bf makes enough to support both of us and probably a child too. Maybe right now I'm wondering more about different pe…

I agree with you mostly but I think it's important to note that when it comes to what gets you off, people are sufficiently different. Even I see my SO as being of very high value, it doesn't mean that's enough in itself to make me feel sexually fulfilled all the time. I'm not saying that I would need to always feel sexually fulfilled completely, but just being touched by my SO isn't enough to drive me up the wall from a purely physical standpoint. Sometimes, yes, that's actually enough for me, …

I absolutely agree with this. My current and previous relationships have always benefitted from the fact that I cook. Men love to feel taken care of, especially when it's their mouthes and tummies that get a reward. Who doesn't love tasty food?! I don't know anyone!

It has to do with the sugars in the milk solids. You cook them long enough and they caramelize. This is why brown butter smells like the beginnings of caramel.

Stay/get in good shape. Work on being feminine (courteous, approachable, friendly, dress nice, not a b****). Learn skills that are useful for life - cooking, another language, conversation, etc. Always look to better yourself. You can't have it all, no one can have it all. Traveling is great but it's definitely pricey - but if you can do it, it's a great way to learn prospective.

We generally eat mostly plant-based but still eat animal proteins sometimes - that said, he loves indian food. Lots of different curries (not just because there's a lot of vegetarian heavy recipes but he just loves the taste too). For not veggie based, he loves fish. We grill a lot so grilled whole fish stuffed with lemon and herbs is always amazing. We also eat a LOT of whole grains so I make one-pot whole-grain pasta sometimes. It's delicious, hearty, efficient, and clean up is a breeze.

Oy. I tried to write basically what you did but you did it so much better. I absolutely agree with you. A name change is probably the least important part of a marriage - it doesn't change who you are. Plus, if this is something that is a deal breaker for someone in a relationship, then you shouldn't marry that person anyway.

During Communist rule (at least in urban settings) both men and women went to university to become doctors, engineers, accountants, into academia, etc. My parents are from Moscow. At the time, there was a very strong push for gender equality in terms of the workforce (definitely not for personality traits like masculine/feminine though - women were still expected to be the epitome of femininity, just also very academically and professionally successful). I know many families that have similar st…

This is one of those things that for me are a little trickier than at first glance. Obviously, in western cultures it is customary to take the husband's last name but in many other cultures (even more traditional ones) the wife doesn't necessarily take his name. My family (and SO's family) is from Eastern Europe and while some women do take the husband's last name, others do not. Many women from my country (at least in the urban areas) received professional degrees and already established their …

Generally it's not smart to ask for advice about girls from girls - you know that expression to not ask a fish how to catch a fish? But, regardless, this girl has some past drama issues. Maybe her ex really was bad and she was taken by complete surprise that he was actually so violent, but more likely, she's a type of person that attracts drama (which I would consider to be a red flag). Furthermore, the first time you were in her home, she showed you her undergarments. Weird boundaries maybe?

Expecting friendship from a guy is just like expecting intimacy/relationship from a girl. You're not entitled to have a guy be friends with you. It makes no sense to feel hurt when a guy no longer wants to talk to you after finding out you're taken. Just bring it up when it feels natural - perhaps in an anecdote or when talking about your weekend. If he keeps talking to you just make sure that you're not interested in him romantically. Platonic relationships are possible, but they don't necessar…

That's not the only instance of something like that. We've been asked if we were married and he said, "basically"; my friends were discussing weddings and he said something about what our wedding would look like; his parents will talk about our futures together; we'll talk about parenting styles; it's just the combination of so many instances. But I also wouldn't want to bring it up and trigger something that would make him think negatively about that, however we already live together (where he …

I don't know how long they dated exactly but apparently it wasn't long. I think it did take him a bit of time to recover because she ended it very abruptly while also telling him that basically he's not good enough for her. Dads seem to always give great advice, even when they're not the best fathers. My dad wasn't always around, he was sort of dumb, crazy ADHD, but would sometimes say things like, "men have two modes: hungry and horny, and if he's not either, he's sleeping." I feel like this applies to beautiful and pretty girls more than average looking girls or ugly girls. In order to be told that you're always awesome and be handed everything and be presented with opportunities, you have to be of somewhat high SMV to begin with. Just as a small tip for cooking turkey (or any poultry for that matter): Instead of worrying that your turkey gets too dry, I make a paste of egg whites and salt (kind of strange, I know) and smother the turkey in that. It's a form of salt-baking and what it does is seal the skin so that moisture doesn't leave. Prior to that, I'll usually brine the turkey in ice water, apple cider, apple cider vinegar, stock (vegetable or chicken), juniper berries, bay leaves, peppercorns, allspice berries, and …

Although you are right to a degree, I would say that it's still incredible important to realize what you're doing, and that guys aren't ALWAYS super-duper alpha, and you have to understand that you will (most likely) never be with someone who is perfect for you. All guys have some beta traits that you have to learn are OK and not detrimental. They obviously need to be leaders but you gotta learn to not jump on the next thing because they seem more alpha than who you're with. Edit: Sorry! I rerea…

She's friends with some of her exs, but not really good friends or anything. Those exs are people with a lot of mutual friends. And honestly, I wouldn't know if she tells her partners everything or not. I know what she tells them when I'm present but usually if someone asks her a question, she will answer it straight up. I'm pretty sure that she never told her partners that she cheated before them because they probably never asked/were too afraid to ask.

This is the opposite of blaming men. I'm saying that she is the one that is delusional. And that she keeps lying to herself that these men are right for her. There are men with certain traits, such as being very emotional, that maybe some girls truly do find attractive, but she doesn't, and she goes for the same type of guy each time and doesn't learn. Calling a guy a pussy doesn't make him BAD or blameworthy. It's a certain characteristic that repels (a good amount) women on the long run. It's …

I wouldn't say that she cheated on her exs, but maybe I would say that there always seemed like something was missing. When I look back at her relationships, I can very clearly see that most of her exs were on the emotional side, and while it's not bad to be emotional, it's not a good thing when they feel like they can express their sadness or intense emotion before she does. I would say that her exs were, for lack of a better word, pussies and a girl can only fool herself for so long thinking t…

Why would I be talking to this guy one on one? It's also somewhat inappropriate to ask the best friend of the girl you are interested in if the girl has cheated on someone before, because it's not really something that I think is right for me to say behind her back. Have I known this guy for a while? It's a type of hypothetical situation that I've never experienced before and I probably will never experience.

I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, but ever since this happened I have been somewhat cautious about really believing what she says. I guess only time will tell if she has taken to heart what I told her. Hopefully this is a turning point in her life. If she continues to spiral down like this, I would very seriously reconsider having her as a part of my life.

I understand your point of view, but when people are self-destructive, it doesn't mean that you will also become self-destructive, not should you really care if your reputation is ruined because you care about someone. And like I said, I'm not in anyway justifying her actions. There is no excuse for them. But our friendship isn't defined by only what she does with her significant others.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. I really feel bad for her more than angry. I mean, i DO feel angry, but it's ALMOST out of her control. It's not even the cheating that is sad, it's the fact that she is looking for something illusory to fill a void, and until she can come to terms that it will NEVER happen how she currently envisions it, she will never be truly happy.

Would a guy, who's best friend was consistently cheating on his SO, tell the SO? A best friend who was always there for him? If I was only associated with 100% virtuous people, then I wouldn't have any friends. Everyone has some kind of crappy quality. There's no guarantee of anything in life. Nobody is entitled to finding a person who they can completely trust and love. But love exists, and I don't think that it's what we've been told to believe it is. I think love is a combination of knowing what you provide to a person, knowing why they value you, and providing them back with what they value in you, while being sexually attracted to each other (whether it's physically sexual or mentally sexual doesn't really matter). I don't know what to te…

Probably not because of how loyal of a friend she is. The thing is that she doesn't do these things maliciously (or at least consciously) but she makes bad decisions. However, it's ALSO the kind of guys that go for her. She THINKS she likes vulnerability but she's turned off by it. Her dad isn't very emotional. Thing is, she's very feminine and charming. She takes care of herself, she cooks, she's not aggressive or irrationally confrontational in a relationship, and she's very well read so she's great to talk to plus she's very pretty. She's outwardly like an RPW, kind of "knows her role" in a relationship. She knows what guys want and she has no problem putting their needs first in order to have a happy relationship. I once took a class called The Philosophy of Love and Sex to complete my philosophy minor requirement, and it was amazing, especially in conjunction with reading RPW and TRP. Your post is closely related to something that we studied. In the search for love, if we are halves seeking to make a whole, and if this is the main drive to obtaining love, then once we obtain it and form the whole, we are no longer seeking to obtain. We make the whole and that's that. Our love is complete and there is no …

His family isn't so religious. They drink alcohol, they don't wear specific clothing, they aren't from the Middle East or Afghanistan/Pakistan. They're from Yugoslavia where they (for the most part) are pretty liberal in the sense of religion. The problem isn't that I'm not religious, it's that I'm not from their village where everyone is Muslim. I have never heard them say a single thing in Arabic or prayer. Their children are not raised religious. It's the fact that I'm not like them.

My potential father-in-law treats me as if I'm a person of lesser value. It feels dehumanizing. Women aren't allowed to participate in conversation aside from asking if they can clear someone's plate or if they want more food. And if they step out of line then they are belittled in front of everyone. I'm not trying to appeal to his dad in a sexual way. This hasn't to do with being seen as a sexual object in his dad's eyes. Personally I didn't have any increased thoughts of suicide. Maybe if I kept taking it, it could've happened but in the 6 months that I was taking it and still going to my therapist, I didn't experience any negative side effects. I was initially put on Fluoxetine but I had bad reactions to it. Each time I would titrate up 5mg I would have an anxiety attack and then when I went from 15 to 20 I broke out into hives.

I wish I could tell you exactly why they are so adamant about this but the best explanation I can give you is that they come from a mindset that depression does not exist and that antidepressants are wrong.
