I am so sorry for what you are going through. I feel you. Some great advice below. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed. Consult with a few lawyers and hire the best that money can buy (and for your situation). Also use your anger to get organized, figure out your next steps, and fight to protect as much of your assets as possible and your right to co-parent. The foreign country is definitely something you need to consult with a lawyer about.

Last name is not important for a connection. If it were, every mother who doesn’t share the same last name with her child should feel bitter and angry or disconnected from the child.

It’s also not fair on a woman to have to give half of everything and provide alimony and/or child support when the gender situation is reversed. And it does happen. It’s just not fair all around. What might help with you to cope with this though, is to ask yourself whether she chose to not work outside the home because she actually thought it would be easier for her, or whether she felt she had to give up a career because kids needed a parent at home or her income would not justify the cost of n…

If she’s the one who initiated the divorce, and there was no betrayal or other red flag issue, it’s shitty that you were cut out of something as important as the funeral of someone you thought of as family for 32 yrs

I get it. The conflicting emotions are tearing you up. I use my therapist to vent and explore first my overwhelming sense of loss and sadness, then anger towards her for not sticking it out, for not seeing that I am working on myself, for throwing away so many years, and for my kid. Very deep seated anger. Then when we are taking care of our kid and when in front of lawyers, I have to be so nice. But I’m still assertive in making sure things are equitable and I’m not getting shafted. It’s tough.…

Oops my bad. I think a detail in another post chain crept into my head when I was writing this.

I could understand her if she was working 60+ hours per week…heck I would be sympathetic to her if she had to work 50+ hours per week. But 37 hours per week???!! Come on. Also, she had an affair. Enough said.

Maybe do both of you a solid then, and let her go (divorce). Financially will be painful for both of you, but don’t you both deserve a second chance with other people? Doesn’t she deserve to know what is going on with you? You will still be your kids’ dad.

If that is the only “problem,” the romance/attraction may come back if at least one of you is determined. It may take time. Maybe there is peri-menopause, menopause-pause, or other stressors and health issues that sort of killed the romantic intimacy. Maybe she gained a lot of weight after the kids were born? Aging can also really fuck up a woman’s self-image and acceptance of her changing body, much less gaining a lot of weight. Especially if she once considered herself beautiful/pretty. 7 year…

She makes a lot more than you. I don’t think you need to worry about an alimony request from you. If you two get 50:50 custody of the kids, she will probably be court-ordered to pay alimony to YOU.

That is pretty shitty. If one person is obviously hurt while the other one who initiated may be sad about the lost relationship but not at all sad about her decision to divorce, why aren’t there boundaries? Didn’t one person effectively break up with / dump the other person? Why does she still get to call your family her family? Didn’t she abdicate that right? If the divorce was truly mutual and amicable, I can understand it. But what is happening here? Staying close “friends” after any long-ter…

You make a lot of sense. If you (not you personally) make the mistake of putting someone on a pedestal because you always lead with your heart and are a big feeler, though, you want to make sure that you are on an equal footing, meaning you need the same from your partner.

Seek therapy. You’re blaming yourself for most of this when in this case, she probably deserves equal blame. As long as you take most of the blame, I don’t think you will really heal. It also lets her create what might be a false narrative where her shit doesn’t stink. I mean, you can try but there are some things that you can’t change. Can you take more responsibility for chores or whatever was a problem? Probably, but would it have been equitable? For example, do you have to spend way more tim…

I understand your pain as I was the one who was left. Maybe the marriage wasn’t meant to be. All couples fight sometimes, all couples have stuff to work on eventually. That is normal and healthy. As couples get older and busier, especially when they have kids, the stresses can be tremendous and people can grow apart. But that’s marriage and commitment, isn’t it? To continue to try to support each other through better or for worse, through sickness and in health? That’s what “family” does. Otherw…

I agree this is a vital sub. It’s important to remember that crazy hate comments about all women is just hate (just talking about the “crazy” comments). Trashing your ex (or lending support) should be ok since this is someone’s experience. Just saying.

I agree with you. I think it gets crazy when it starts becoming a tirade about all women using harmful stereotypes. It’s misogynistic. But men do need this outlet to just let everything out about their situation. They should be able to be as vitriolic and bitter as they want about what’s happening to them. It can be really healing.

I hear that if someone moves out, the other can get the house bc the one who moved out can be slapped with “abandonment” of the house and marriage. You don’t know how things might be twisted. So definitely do NOT move out.

Or…he just put the wrong woman on that pedestal. Woman needs to adore her guy back. It’s difficult to impossible to ever trust another woman after that though. Like searching for a needle in a haystack.
